I WAS out all day Monday so didn’t manage to put up a Super Single.
My both to score double saw three out of four teams but Helsingborg failed miserably to beat the bet.
On Tuesday attention turns to the Champions League qualifiers with 12 ties and with help from the Racing and Football Outlook’s excellent stats section I’ve had a close look at the games.
Many of them are mismatches but there a couple of interesting ones such as Maribor v Astana, Sarajevo v Lech Poznan and Trencin v Steaua Bucharest.
For goals the matches to consider are Midtjylland on their Champions League debut against Gibraltar minnows Lincoln Red Imps, Bulgarian champs Ludogorets at home to Moldovans Milsami and Partizan Belgrade against Georgians Dila Gori.
Irish champs Crusaders face a tough test at Albanians Skenderbeu who came through two ties last season before losing to BATE on away goals.
And Welsh champs TNS are in action on their plastic pitch at home to Hungarians Videoton who arrive without their two first-choice keepers and not a lot up front. It’s difficult to predict how TNS will fare against better opposition than they face week in week out but they put away B36 Torshavn 6-2 on aggregate and will be feeling confident. TNS draw no bet at 13-8 with bet365 tempts me for a 1pt Super Single.
The concensus seems to be with Slovakian champs Trencin who have warmed up nicely with a couple of good friendly wins against a Steaua side who lost in the Romanian Supercup at the weekend to Targu Mures. One concern is Trencin’s title win was built on an almost flawless home record and this match has been moved to Zilina where they played Europa League ties last season.
Lech Poznan were Supercup winners against Legia Warsaw at the weekend and travel to face Vincent Tan’s Sarajevo. Lech crashed out the Europa League last season to Stjarnan and will be out to improve on that showing and should do so as they are champions and an improved team.
For the second Super Single it’s another double – Midtjylland -2 against the Red Imps and Ludogorets -1 against Milsami. There are minnows and then there are the Red Imps and the fact they’re playing in the Champions League qualifiers is a joke really.
They beat another giant of the game in Santa Coloma 2-1 on aggregate to reach this stage but last season lost 5-2 to HB Torshavn in their only away tie. It’s a big night for the Danes who are playing their first Cl tie and as long as they don’t have ring rust they should win by at least three.
Ludogerets were super in the Champions League last season, qualifying then making life tough for the likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid and Basel in the group stage. They have some quality players and should win well as long as they get into gear early and shake off friendly defeats suffered to Lokomotiv Moscow and Sparta Prague.
Elsewhere there are another raft of friendlies including Thailand All Stars v Liverpool, AZ v Dundee Utd and QPR v Monaco. After selling another of their top players, Nadir Ciftci to Celtic, United were hammered 4-0 by Vitesse at the weekend and you have to fear for them if AZ, who have netted 13 goals in two friendlies against weak opposition, field a strong team. However, best price AZ for now is 1-4 at bet365.
