Jan 9: Scottish Junior Football Tips

EVERY Saturday William Hill‘s Owen Scott and McBookie‘s Paul Petrie do battle in the junior football challenge and their back after a festive break.
The dynamic duo will be putting up trebles every weekend and Owen has the bragging rights after four wins this season. He has winnings of £146.39 with Paul is on £14.44.
Unfortunately the bad weather is still here so some games could be off and already it’s almost a wipe-out in the North region.
For those who don’t know anything about junior football the level of the top clubs is equivalent or in some cases better than Scottish League 2 outfits and we can gauge that easier now with the champions of the three regions – North, East and West – qualifying to play in the William Hill Scottish Cup along with the Junior Cup winners.
The term “junior” has nothing to do with players’ ages and it often confuses people outside Scotland. Some of the top clubs such as Auchinleck, Hurlford, Irvine Meadow and Linlithgow pay bigger wages than most League 1 and League 2 teams and therefore attract players who could be plying their trade at a higher level.
McBookie list all games online and take bets on every junior match while William Hill only take bets in shops. Here are this weekend’s tips from Owen and Paul.

Owen writes: Happy New Year to all readers of this column.  I ended 2015 a lot better than the way I started it as I couldn’t pick a winner at the beginning of the year.

Hopefully I can get 2016 off to a winning start and I’m beginning in the West Region and taking a side who have hit a bit of form recently and are now live promotion contenders and that’s Kilwinning who are evens at Kilsyth.

Next up I’m taking Kilbirnie who are also evens at Shettleston.  Kilbirnie have had good results this season against the Glasgow men and moved into the title race with last week’s superb win at Auchinleck – one of only two games that were scheduled. I expect more of the same this weekend.

Finally to complete my treble I’m taking Blantyre at 7-5 at home to Ardrossan. Vics are now under new management and I reckon they can get off to a good start with three points.

Paul writes: The juniors are back after the festive break but with the atrocious weather around the country we will do well to pick a game that is on.

In the West I am backing Glenafton to beat Irvine Meadow at 21-20. Meadow are in a rare relegation fight this season with only one win in the league and I don’t think new manager David Greig will have had enough time to make any real impact this weekend.

Over in the East I am backing Edinburgh Utd to beat Forfar West End at 4-6. Callum Elliot has done an amazing job turning things around at the capital side and although just one place separates the two teams in the league I am confident of a home win. The only fear is Forfar West End are a well-organised team and can be difficult to break down.

I am sticking to the East and backing Downfield to beat Scone at 4-9. The Spiders are still top of the league but have played more games than their rivals and their title bid is under serious pressure. However, they are the league’s top scorers and should have more than enough firepower to pick up the three points.
