Jan 9: Johnb’s Racing Tips & Chat

Racing_WilliamHill

JOHNB ended Sunday empty-handed for the loss of 3pts and he’s now 16.75pts down for January.

His Monday picks are both decent prices and here’s hoping for a winner or two.

Johnb’s Monday Tips

Lingfield 3:20
Justice Rock 10-1 NB bet365

Wolverhampton 5:05
Hyland Heather 7-1 NAP bet365

double 87-1 bet365

Antepost Tips

  • 1000 Guineas 2017 – PROMISE TO BE TRUE 20-1 Betfred (now 25-1)
  • 2000 Guineas 2017 – CHURCHILL 20-1 bet365 (now 6-4)
  • 2017 Derby – CHURCHILL 33-1 Racebets (now 7-1)
  • 2000 Guineas 2017 – BLUE POINT 14-1 racebets (now 33-1)

Johnb says: “I have already advised Churchill for next year’s 2000 Guineas & Derby – he has been really impressive this season and my view is he will get even better next year.

“Blue Point on the other hand is harder to call for how he will progress next year. If he trains on then in my view it’s a straight fight between Blue Point & Churchill but in the Derby Churchill is the only horse for me – he gives me the same excitement as Golden Horn did.

“But to answer my question earlier the most impressive horse I have seen this year is BLUE POINT with Churchill and Annie Power a close second and third.”

Fantastic as always Alan. I don’t post much on this page, but I like to have a gander and follow your posts. Very consistent, and probably should have your tips headlined with Johnbs as you win most days. Well done.

Alan doesn’t need to be headlined – maybe that would put pressure on him.
Everyone is welcome to contribute to blah blah’s racing section.
It’s people like Alan who help make it a success but without Johnb it wouldn’t have started.

Have to agree with Mr Fixit I’m no where near as talented as Johnb how as the pressure of keeping everyone happy everyday if I have a losing streak I just fade in to the background and wait.
So yes happy to put up daily with all the other great tipsters on this page.

My Renaissance 2.30 wolves. Trainer in great form. The horse in great form, won really well last time after enduring a troublesome run. Adam Kirby now rides for the first time. The race lacks any strength in depth to it. There are no negatives but plenty of positives.

    Evening all,

A dissapointing day yesterday with my small investment on Killer Crow dissapointing. Two small bets for me tomorrow. I don’t have time to do the write up this evening- this will follow in the morning.

    15.10 Doncaster – I Just Know 11/4 (1.5pnts)

3rd time I’ve put this one up let’s hope it’s 3rd time lucky!

    15.35 Wolverhampton – Our Channel 6/4 (1.5 pnts)

Many thanks and GL to all

If our channel runs true, he has to turn around form with forceful appeal with big weight pull this time, especially as it was his first run in 5 months.
Only doubt is that with only 4 runners it might be a plod and a sprint down the straight which could negate the weight pull somewhat.

Won’t be lumping on at 5-4, but will do it in double with Alan’s nap.
      Good luck harry.

      Write Ups:

      15.10 Doncaster – I Just Know 11/4

As I said last night this will now be the third time in a row that I have backed this horse after his really impressive chase debut at Hexham, each time he seems to have bumped into an improver. Last time it was the really well handicapped Two Smokin Barrels (won next time), but what constantly impresses me about this horse is when he is headed he continues to rally. In both of his last two runs after he had been headed on the front end it looks like he may sink without a trace, but no he battled on for second. His attitude is clearly game to say the least and he is a superb jumper of fences. He remains on the same mark as his last two runs (114) and the goodish ground should not be a problem. Doncaster is a course that does favour front runners and I expect I Just Know to be send off on the front end (hopefully bowling along in front) and there is every chance he may make every yard (1.5 points to win). I backed this horse last night at the advised 11/4 but there has been a lot of money for him this morning but I still think there is a hint of value in the 7/4 still around.

      15.35 Wolverhampton – Our Channel 6/4

This ex William Haggas inmate has sat in my tracker since he won the Epsom Derby Trial back in 2014. Unfortunately, the Epsom trial isn’t much of a trial for the Derby any more but still a useful race nonetheless. Since then I think it is safe to say Our Channel never really fulfilled his potential until he finally landed black type at Kempton in March. Most of his best form in the last few years has come on the all-weather and he can kick off his claims for finals day today at Wolverhampton. He made his first start for five months for new connections on Boxing day when carrying a mammoth weight in a C&D handicap to a pretty fair fourth place. One can only think that the race on boxing day was only a pipe opener given his handicap mark and that run should have put him spot on for today. Being a conditions race today he meets 4 opponents (inc boxing day conquer Forceful Appeal) on much more favourable terms. He is undoubtable the class horse in the race and I think he has good claims of rewarding his new owners (1.5 points to win). The Melbourne 10 Racing team have invested a lot of money in horses in the last few months and they deserve success. I backed this horse at 6/4 last night but is now available at a very temping 9/4!

Many Thanks and GL to all

For anyone that doesn’t know, There will be no live racing from Britain in ladbrokes, coral and betfred shops today

    • Profile photo of harryjw
      harryjw 4 months ago

I saw that seems like Arc is pushing its weight about. A shame because of course the punters suffer.

But on another note Betfred are the worst of all the “big” bookmakers by a mile a shocking online site. I simply don’t use them ever.

      • Profile photo of dynamo needarest
        dynamo needarest 4 months ago

Their shops are just as bad. Don’t usually use them but seen they had a “Money back if your horse finishes 2nd at Chepstow” offer on yesterday. Placed my bet in the morning, 2 horses finished 2nd, went to get money back only to be told “oh sorry the offer only applies if you placed the bet 15mins before the off or after”.

Didn’t say that anywhere in the shop, on the slip or even the shop assistants notes. That’ll be my last visit to betfred.

        • Profile photo of harryjw
          harryjw 4 months ago

Yep that sounds about right! They often do that online it says best odds on all uk/ire racing. So a few months ago I placed my bet at about 2 am after lots of studying. Turns out it’s only best odds from 8am!! And until last year it was only best odds if placed 15mins before!! Plus they don’t do best odds on all “Lucky” bets.

Shocking really when you compare them to the competition online.

        • Profile photo of Mr Fixit
          Mr Fixit 4 months ago

If they didn’t state it anywhere you’ve got a right to claim your stake back.
I’d ask to speak to a manager or customer services.

          • Profile photo of dynamo needarest
            dynamo needarest 4 months ago

Already spoke to customer services Mr F.

They came back with a response of the in store tv’s periodically display information about the offers and sent picture of a tv showing a Money back offer for newcastle from a week ago as proof.

Must come up very periodically if the shop assistants in the store and the 3 people they phoned never knew about it lol.

Tbf I’m not all that bothered as I was going to stick the money on Greyed A anyway. Just won’t use betfred in future.

    • Profile photo of harryjw
      harryjw 4 months ago

      Waxi,

I’ve used this system for 4 years now and it’s been incredibly profitable. I have my set criteria and horses have to meet all of them to warrant an increased stake (not including any inside information passed on).

I can give you the stats from this page:
I have been posting on this site since the start of November in which time I have given 21 increased bets of which 13 have returned a profit (62%). With 15points placed on each bet my bets are in profit by 181.38points (prices from 11/8 to 11/4).

Those stats have allowed me to record profit stats of 78.92 (Nov) 65.83 (Dec) and so far 44.97 (Jan).

It requires patience and the utmost selectivness. Also if you have a bad run you have to stick by it.

I have full faith in my system but this is horse racing and opionions differ on everything.

Let’s hope whatever your system we all continue to bash those bookies!

      Many thanks

Harry i was actually going to ask u about yr stats tomorrow so u saved me asking thanks mate! Hope u dont think i was doubting u in any way about what i asked johnb i just respect johnbs opinion and i was just intrested if he had an opinion on it. Im just trying to improve my own betting so the more opinions the better! Keep doing what yr doing mate yr doing a great job on here we all r greatful..that goes for all the others who post their tips also!

    • Profile photo of Johnb
      Johnb 4 months ago

It’s everyone to their own, I am not a fan of increasing stakes as I was always told by a very wise man who made his fortune as a bookie because he always said punters don’t know how to bet but he told me that whether you back an even money or a 100/1 horse always have the same amount on and never back each way, when I asked why for the same stake he said because if you want to put less on that means you don’t fancy it as much so why back it, and he has been right as a lot of times my less fancied horses have won,
My view is if you back more on your fancied horse it could eventually get you in trouble but that’s only my opinion

      • Profile photo of harryjw
        harryjw 4 months ago

        Johnb,

That’s fair enough I know a lot of punters who thing the same way who are also very profitable. Its what works for you. Obviously you have to make sure you stick strictly to your staking pattern and don’t shift from it (we have spoken about this before).

One this is for sure I certainly wouldn’t not be taking any advice from bookmakers though!!

I am joking of course, but I do have one question if you believe in that why do you give NAP/NBs on your stronger fancies?

        Cheers

        • Profile photo of Johnb
          Johnb 4 months ago

That was my choice years ago but it’s actually two bets, 1 point on the NAP & 1 point on the NB which keeps everything to 1pt level stakes

The difference between my Nap and then a Nap/Nb is that my Nap pretty much ticks all the boxes some more than others but when I Nap/Nb a horse aswell as tickling most of the boxes it’s also way way higher in price that I think it should be, like tomorrow I had Mithqaal as a 4/6 shot after his last run on fibresand

          • Profile photo of harryjw
            harryjw 4 months ago

But I mean you are increasing your stake on a horse you fancy more and rate as value.

This is the principle that my whole system is built around. I actually don’t think our systems our that different. Granted I do increase 10x on my “increased bets” but they are built on the same foundations.

The most important thing is coming out on the right side!

I like to have the odd dabble on South African racing and don’t know if anyone spotted it but M J Jooste the owner had the winner in the last at lingfield. He’s one of the top owners over there. Last year he had 2 runners in England and this year he’s got 4 as yet unnamed derby entries. Keep an eye out for his silks the green chest black sleeve and hat. Theese aren’t cheap horses he’s buying. Could be 1 to watch maybe

    Evening all,

It was a profitable day today after I Just Know jumped his way to victory. I’ve looked out 3 bets for tomorrow including 1 increased stake bet.

    1.00 Lingfield – Missed Approach 2/1

I tipped up Missed Approach last week when Lingfield was called off and given this race is all but the same I will use same write up:

While Missed Approach was well beaten by Label Des Obeaux on chase debut at Exeter last time, I think he can over turn the form tomorrow. That run in November came at a time when the Greatrex was in a poor run of form – he had a number of horses at 2/1 or shorter turned over, but now the yard is back in good form I’m expecting Missed approach to put up a better showing, I’m not sure if the yard had a virus but something was not right. Missed approach was by far the best of these over hurdles, winning a decent race at Newbury before running at Cheltenham and then finishing a good second at Ayr. His jumping was adequate on debut but he will undoubtably come on for that run. Already a winner on soft ground conditions should be fine as at 2/1 he rates as a decent small stake bet in my book (1.5pnts). The Plug also mentioned last week that this horse has had a wind op since his last race which also goes in his favour!

    1.30 Lingfield – Peggies Venture 7/4

Piggies Venture looks a decent bet tomorrow at Lingfield, as this horse makes her hurdles debut. She showed some really top form in bumpers and her second in a listed bumper rates as top quality form. That day she took it up 2F out and while she was eventually out battled by the classy Oscar Rose by a neck (front two well clear) she showed a really game attitude- the same can’t be said by her main marker rival tomorrow. The Nipper (5/4) also showed some good bumper form before running out when sent off 11/4F for a decent Punchestown bumper, then on hurdles debut she fell at the last when well beaten at Kempton. She undoubtedly has class but I can’t be taking the 5/4 on offer, but the 7/4 Peggies Venture is more than tempting. Conditions will be fine for the selection and I expect Alan King will have her well schooled for tomorrow- she is worth a small investment (1.5pnts)

    1.45 Southwell – Wick Powell 13/8

What is it they say about gift horses? I’ve spent the last hour going over Wick Powell’s form looking to find fault but I can’t and therefore, I have to back him with an increased stake. This horse won his maiden over C&D in an really impressive manner and has gone from strength to strength since. Narrowly beaten in a nursery and a conditions race he went on to run a big race (7th) in a top York nursery followed by running second in a top Irish sales race he finished off his 2yo season by winning the £175’000 Redcar Trophy (Listed). He made all that day at Redcar and he can do the same tomorrow in this small field event. Quite frankly a mark of 85 is unheard of for a horse of this quality and it seems the shrewd Barron team want to capitalise on it before aiming for bigger things. He has been off for 101 days but he ran really well after a layoff between his maiden win and his neck second at Thirsk, he has proven himself on fibersand, the yard is going well (2 wins 3 places from 9 runners in 2017) and course specialist Andrew Mullen continues the saddle. While he does have to give away weight to all opposition he should have the ability to do so given nothing has form even close to his. Quite simply I have to increase my bet for tomorrow (15pnts). But as always nothing is assured.

Many thanks and GL to all

Forgive me for asking but would you not be concerned that Richard Johnson goes to Lingfield for just the one ride and Greatrex has a record of 5-8 with hurdlers at the track.

      Paddy,

I welcome some debate! Thanks for the comment, Your right Greatrex has a good record here (50% record at Lingfield over the past 5 years). So that does worry me yes but My first tip is actually a Greatrex runner so It’s not all that bad!

I tend not to read much into the Johnson line though as he didn’t have a option to go anywhere else and his agent obvisouly only managed to get him one ride here tomorrow. If I was the owner I would want him on board! But it’s not like he chose the ride on The Nipper over something else.

Like I said in my write up The Nipper is a very classy horse but at the prices I’d much rather be with Peggie based on attitude alone.

I see the January system is being mentioned, I advised this a couple of year ago because it’s the most profitable system out there and I think it’s always been the most profitable
This is because one age group gets a big advantage at the weights, 6 year olds

    Criteria

    January

4yo+ Selling Stakes 8f or more

    Aged 6yo

top third in the betting, so 9 runners top 3 in betting, 12 runners top 4 in betting

People often ask me “why January? & why 6yo’s?”

The reason is, all horses have their birthday on the 1st January, so the 4yos that run are really 3yos, the 5yos are really 4yos, the 6yos are really 5yos and so on

A horse is said to be at its peak at 5yo, these 6yo’s like I said are really only 5yo but they are getting a better weight for being 6yo on paper

For years this system works out at about 33% strike rate but the profits are massive,
Since I mentioned it a couple of years ago only 4 horses have qualified for a bet and 3 have won,
You don’t get many chances to back a horse as it’s only in January we do it
