THAT was a tough set of results and I was relieved to land a good Super Single.
Goals were at a premium throughout the card and the fact only one team netted at home in League One sums it up.
Barnsley were my 23-10 Super Single and I sacrificed 0.25 points to cover the draw at Bradford late on.
Ajax beat my Top Treble as they failed to score at home to Heracles and the both teams to score treble had no chance on a night of little excitement.
Most of the thrills were confined for Anfield where Liverpool beat Stoke on penalties to reach the Capital One Cup Final.
Tonight we find out if they’ll face Manchester or city rivals Everton and I have to favour the home side who trail 2-1 from the first leg at Goodison.
Everton have been hard to fathom this season and their best displays have come against the better teams. They were superb in drawing 3-3 at Chelsea recently but woeful as they crashed 2-1 at home to Swansea.
City can hurt a dodgy defence with Sergio Aguero fit again and among he goals and I wouldn’t be surprised if he scored to set up a Man City-Liverpool final.
Elsewhere PSG should beat Toulouse for a fourth time this season to reach the French League Cup Final and Juventus can take care of Inter in the first leg of their Italian Cup semi-final.
There are also two Spanish Cup quarter-final second-leg affairs with Atletico Madrid at home to Celta Vigo after a 0-0 draw and Barcelona 2-1 up as they entertain Athletic Bilbao who they beat 6-0 at home in the league 10 days ago.
I’ve studied as many games as possible and I’m siding with the favourites in most matches. Juventus have won 13 in a row and should edge out Roberto Mancini’s defensive-minded Inter to take a first-leg lead to Milan.
Juve start my Top Treble and I complete it in Holland with PSV at lowly Excelsior and AZ at home to struggling Cambuur. PSV have netted exactly three on their last three trips to an Exclesior side who have taken just two points from their last 27.
AZ are unbeaten in five and last time out recorded a fine 4-2 victory against Feynoord with a hat-trick from Vincent Janssen. They should beat a Cambuur outfit who have lost their last two and have conceded at least two goals in 15 of their last 18 away matches.
I’m tempted by Atletico Madrid and Barcelona but the sides meet at the Nou Camp on Saturday in a massive league encounter so I’d like to see starting line-ups before considering either.
Barca left Lionel Messi out the first leg and Luis Suarez was suspended but both return to the squad.
For a both to score treble I’m starting with Man City v Everton. Both sides have been conceding and scoring and I’m hoping it’s a high-scoring cracker. Add NEC v Twente which has finished 2-5, 1-3, 3-1, 2-4 and 3-4 in the last five meetings.
I thought about completing the treble with the PSV game which stands up on h2h but not on recent Exclesior form so instead I’ll risk Barca-Bilbao. That 6-0 came about with Athletic having keeper Gorka Iraizov sent off inside five minutes and they were much more competitive in the cup clash.
Athletic netted five against Eibar at the weekend and will have to push forward here. If Barca are weakened or have an eye on the Atletico game this couls add to the away side’s chances of netting.
Finding a Super Single at evens or above today wasn’t easy but since my profit is healthy enough I’m risking 0.9pts on Aguero to score first. If he doesn’t I’ll still have 6pts in hand for the last four days of the month.
