I WENT from a full house on Wednesday to an empty on Thursday – but when playing with level stakes that means a hefty profit over the two nights.
On a quiet night I decided to split the Super Single into two 2.5 bets – Ivory Coast to win and a double on Real Madrid/Barcelona.
The Ivory Coast fielded a strong side and missed a load of chances in their 2-0 Abu Dhabi friendly defeat to a weakened Sweden but I’m well aware of the risks in taking games such as these on.
I backed Real Madrid to beat Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Copa del Rey tie and they probably should have but two Fernando Torres goals – and that’s something I’ve not written for years – left them with a mountain climb.
The one I called correctly was Barcelona to win at Elche even though we knew they’d field their youngsters. What I didn’t know was Elche would also play their reserves.
I always say team news is crucial and if I’d known in advance I’d have backed Barcelona at least at minus two even though they led 5-0 from the first leg. It finished 4-0 after a second-half cruise that brought a fourth goal in injury time.
For many people on the site Friday will be about the big Scottish Championship game between Rangers and Hearts. I’ve gone out on a limb by backing the leaders strongly against a team who haven’t been performing well and a club that’s in crisis after the latest developments surrounding Mike Ashley.
Well-known Jambos fan raaljaca has also tipped his team to win well and after starting at 13-5 the best I can see now on an away win is 9-5 with William Hill. That has to be my Super Single and I’ve posted a separate preview with my full thoughts on the match at Ibrox.
Elsewhere there are two English games – Preston v Orient and Cheltenham v Morecambe – while Bordeaux face Nice in French Ligue 1 and Ajax tackle Groningen in the Dutch league.
I like Ajax who almost always beat Groningen at home and thought Stan James’ 1-1 on Bordeaux was big until I checked team news. Bordeaux have striker Cheick Diabate injured while defender Lamine Sane, midfielder Wahbi Khazri, defensive midfielder Andre Biyogo Poko and midfielders Abdou Traore and Henri Saivet are at the African Cup of Nations.
Nice can’t play new signing Hatem Ben Arfa’s until his eligibility is ruled on while right-back Lloyd Palun is at the African Nations and defender Mathieu Bodmer injured. Nice drew 1-1 on their last two visits to Bordeaux and have a chance of picking up another point with their hosts missing so many players.
The goal-laden Juliper League is back and there are French Ligue 2 and National matches.
I guarantee good calls on these games will be posted and while my focus is on writing my Daily Record weekend column I’m putting up a Daily Double on Ajax and Brest who are at home to Niort.
And for a Top Treble I’m on Ajax, Preston to beat Orient and Belgian leaders Bruges to take care of Nechelen at home. Reasoning and maybe a goals tip will be added later.
