Jan 10: Johnb’s Racing Tips & Chat

JOHNB has a double-stake pick for Tuesday that he reckons can be grand on the fibresand.

Our man, who is 19.75pts down for January after drawing a blank on Monday, also has a tip from the Wolverhampton all-weather.

Johnb’s Monday Tips

Southwell 2:20
Mithqaal 6-4 NAP/NB (double stake)

This horse loved the fibresand last time but it’s no surprise as he is by Speightstown who’s progeny love this surface. Step up in distance not a problem and expected to win again.

Wolverhampton 3:40
Ardamir 11-4 skybet

This horse was extremely unlucky last time on the all weather and went straight into the notebook, found trouble more than once and still finished a good 4th to Petite Jack and with Adam Kirby onboard should be winning this.

Double 8.38/1 skybet

Antepost Tips

  • 1000 Guineas 2017 – PROMISE TO BE TRUE 20-1 Betfred (now 25-1)
  • 2000 Guineas 2017 – CHURCHILL 20-1 bet365 (now 6-4)
  • 2017 Derby – CHURCHILL 33-1 Racebets (now 7-1)
  • 2000 Guineas 2017 – BLUE POINT 14-1 racebets (now 33-1)

Johnb says: “I have already advised Churchill for next year’s 2000 Guineas & Derby – he has been really impressive this season and my view is he will get even better next year.

“Blue Point on the other hand is harder to call for how he will progress next year. If he trains on then in my view it’s a straight fight between Blue Point & Churchill but in the Derby Churchill is the only horse for me – he gives me the same excitement as Golden Horn did.

“But to answer my question earlier the most impressive horse I have seen this year is BLUE POINT with Churchill and Annie Power a close second and third.”

    Evening all,

It was a profitable day today after I Just Know jumped his way to victory. I’ve looked out 3 bets for tomorrow including 1 increased stake bet.

    1.00 Lingfield – Missed Approach 2/1

I tipped up Missed Approach last week when Lingfield was called off and given this race is all but the same I will use same write up:

While Missed Approach was well beaten by Label Des Obeaux on chase debut at Exeter last time, I think he can over turn the form tomorrow. That run in November came at a time when the Greatrex was in a poor run of form – he had a number of horses at 2/1 or shorter turned over, but now the yard is back in good form I’m expecting Missed approach to put up a better showing, I’m not sure if the yard had a virus but something was not right. Missed approach was by far the best of these over hurdles, winning a decent race at Newbury before running at Cheltenham and then finishing a good second at Ayr. His jumping was adequate on debut but he will undoubtably come on for that run. Already a winner on soft ground conditions should be fine as at 2/1 he rates as a decent small stake bet in my book (1.5pnts). The Plug also mentioned last week that this horse has had a wind op since his last race which also goes in his favour!

    1.30 Lingfield – Peggies Venture 7/4

Piggies Venture looks a decent bet tomorrow at Lingfield, as this horse makes her hurdles debut. She showed some really top form in bumpers and her second in a listed bumper rates as top quality form. That day she took it up 2F out and while she was eventually out battled by the classy Oscar Rose by a neck (front two well clear) she showed a really game attitude- the same can’t be said by her main marker rival tomorrow. The Nipper (5/4) also showed some good bumper form before running out when sent off 11/4F for a decent Punchestown bumper, then on hurdles debut she fell at the last when well beaten at Kempton. She undoubtedly has class but I can’t be taking the 5/4 on offer, but the 7/4 Peggies Venture is more than tempting. Conditions will be fine for the selection and I expect Alan King will have her well schooled for tomorrow- she is worth a small investment (1.5pnts)

    1.45 Southwell – Wick Powell 13/8

What is it they say about gift horses? I’ve spent the last hour going over Wick Powell’s form looking to find fault but I can’t and therefore, I have to back him with an increased stake. This horse won his maiden over C&D in an really impressive manner and has gone from strength to strength since. Narrowly beaten in a nursery and a conditions race he went on to run a big race (7th) in a top York nursery followed by running second in a top Irish sales race he finished off his 2yo season by winning the £175’000 Redcar Trophy (Listed). He made all that day at Redcar and he can do the same tomorrow in this small field event. Quite frankly a mark of 85 is unheard of for a horse of this quality and it seems the shrewd Barron team want to capitalise on it before aiming for bigger things. He has been off for 101 days but he ran really well after a layoff between his maiden win and his neck second at Thirsk, he has proven himself on fibersand, the yard is going well (2 wins 3 places from 9 runners in 2017) and course specialist Andrew Mullen continues the saddle. While he does have to give away weight to all opposition he should have the ability to do so given nothing has form even close to his. Quite simply I have to increase my bet for tomorrow (15pnts). But as always nothing is assured.

Many thanks and GL to all.

I think the saddle slipped on petite power there, very unlucky. We need the nap or its 7 points loss for the day. Are you confident busstop? I’m considering putting an extra point on.

    • Profile photo of chumpchange

I had an entirely different take on it sir. Why did the jockey get it rousted out wide for the entire race then pull it back in with less then 2 furlongs to go? How many times does that happen and the gap the jockey craves never appears?
I think it was a terrible ride. End of. But then again differences of opinion is what makes punting so interesting and frustrating in equal measures!

      • Profile photo of Johnb
        Johnb 1 year ago

Ardamir is definitely one the the best winners we didn’t get, and also got to agree with it being a bad ride especially when you take into account that Kirby is supposed to be the top all weather jockey “he only has that title because the top jockeys don’t ride all weather often enough”
But it was a shocker, he had the whole width of the track on his outside but didn’t want to use it, as I said the other day “dealing with muppets” or was it numpties

    Hi guys quick question

I have placed a few Cheltenham ante post accumulators and wondering what happens if one of the horses doesn’t run in the race. Do they just void that leg of the bet or the whole thing? Only reason asking is that I know if you bet as a single you lose the stake.

    • Profile photo of Johnb
      Johnb 1 year ago

If it’s not “non runner no bet” then you lose the whole accumulator

Thanks John I see they have entered Altior in the Champion Chase today. What’s your feeling on whether they will run him in this or the Arkle?

        • Profile photo of Johnb
          Johnb 1 year ago

he has to run in the Arkle but I also still think Min will win the Arkle

It really was a case of looking the gift horse in the mouth on Tuesday with Wick Powell proving he was “too” good to be true. They seemed to go to quick for him and a return to 6f is needed I think. He unfortunately downed my increased stakes bet but Missed Approach did at least save some face doing the job at 2/1 for small money. Two small selections for tomorrow.

    14.30 Newcastle – Bowban 2/1

    3.20 Hereford – Money Maid 4/1 EW

Write ups will follow in the morning.

Many Thanks and GL to all

    1pt profit Tuesday
    January 18.75pts down

    Wednesdays Tips

Gino Trail 13/8 NAP/NB betfred (double stake)

Not bad form this horse for a ten year old and there was no fluke about his last run when he was beat by Buveur D’Air and he was even giving 6lb to the 3/10 favourite, Buveur D’Air is actually third favourite for the Arkle at Cheltenham but as I said it was no fluke as had already had two good wins this season and I would be surprised if anything could get close to him

    Mesophere 13/8 bet365

Handled this surface well on debut when a decent fourth, looked one paced but ran on again late on when the penny dropped,
up another three furlongs today which will help and clearly the one to beat

    double 5.56/1 bet365
