IT'S a big night in the William Hill World Championships with the first of two darts quarter-final ties.
First up at the Ally Pally is Michael van Gerwen against Scotland's Robert Thornton and that's followed by an all-Scots tie between Gary Anderson and Peter Wright.
Thornton hasn't dropped a set on his way to the last eight and top seed van Gerwen is in fine form too so while I'd side with the Dutchman it should be a hard-fought affair that could be close to going the distance.
Van Gerwen is massive favourite at 1-5 with the likes of William Hill with Thornton 4-1 at bet365 and Ladbrokes. In a best of nine-setter the bet I like is Thornton plus 3.5 sets at 4-7 with bet365. Thornton plus 2.5 is of course a bigger price at 11-10 with William Hill and others.
The second match should be a cracker between two fierce rivals and closely-matched stars. Anderson has enjoyed a fantastic season and is the bookies' favourite at 4-9 with William Hill and Ladbrokes.
Wright has unfairly been written off at 2-1 with Betfred and I think it will be closer than the prices suggest.

Van Gerwen v Thornton
Reigning world champion MVG takes on the Scot Thornton for a place in the semi finals. MVG as upped his game having not looked at his very best in the opening two rounds blew Terry Jenkins away in the previous round 4-1 in what many people thought would be a real close affair.
Thornton hasn’t dropped a set yet in this years worlds, but without being unkind he hasn’t played anyone of any pedigree, but he has got the job done. Thornton has never been past the quarters before. These two only matches this year on tv were in the premier league, with MVG edging both games 7-5 (leg format).
As regulars know I am on MVG, so wont be doing much on this game, but the total match sets is at 6.5 looks low to me 4/7 Skybet. I seen some firms have it set at 7.5 and I think that could be covered also, but I will take advantage of the Skybet line.

Anderson v Wright
These two apart from Bunting have probably been the best performers of this years worlds. They have met four times this season and their H2H reads 2-2. I think this will be a cracker and in my opinion there is no way Wright is a 2/1 outsider having made the final last year, and I suspect he will have the crowd on his side he is worth siding with at those odds, in what for me is a 50-50 game. I think it will a tight game and we should see eight sets, in a game I wouldn’t be surprised to see go all the way, so O7.5 sets looks good at 11/10 Coral
If Wright is to prevail then he will need to take out some ton plus finishes, he has the highest checkout percentage of all the players left in the competition at 48% and he will need to be at his best on the doubles, because Anderson will out score snakebite. Wright checkout line is set at 125.5 at 5/6 William Hill and I will take the overs.
Finally whenever Anderson plays you’re guaranteed plenty of maximums, and his line is set at 10.5 evens Various. He hit 14 against Klaasen, and 8 against Reyes. Now Reyes is a slow player and Anderson couldn’t get in to any rhythm but beat him 4-1. That’s 8 maximums in five sets and given that a whitewash is highly unlikely, he should play plenty of sets and legs to cover this total.

Haven’t seen much of Thornton in the tournament.. Anyone tell me what his form is like coming in? Can’t see him having the bottle to beat MVG regardless so feel like a double of VG -2.5 and Anderson is the bet tonight
Damn it chief! I backed Anderson to win as soon as he won last tourney and got 8/1. So can’t back your tip tonight, will go for the o10.5 and hope for the best. Was hoping to see you on ando ;)

New to nhl, was just gonna put money on kings to win. Safe bet?
@deanotron, I don’t think that’s a safe bet. They’ve lost their last 5 straight games on the road. Kings in really bad form atm. Even beaten by Edmonton Oilers who are the whipping boys of the NHL.
I think it’ll go to overtime today but with Canuck’s home advantage I think they’ll take the points. That’s just my opinion tho, not a tip!

Thanks Kev! Yeah gutted, keeps happening latelyygettin beat by 1 point. Might start giving an extra 2 points to teams on my doubles and trebles cos it will land more often but at lower odds.
