IT'S another busy day of racing and here are Milesey's tips.

Kempton 3.20
CLIMAXFORTACKLE 3.2 betfair
She’s only 2lb higher for this run today, Jim Crowley on board should give another solid run.

Kempton 4.20
GUEST OF HONOUR 2.5 betfair
Top weight for this race, which may put quite a few people off, for giving quite a bit to the other runners. The weight rise just may not be enough though to stop this horse winning today with Kirby on board for MARCO BOTTI.

Kempton 4.50
POET’S PROSPECT 1.94 betfair
This Marco Botti filly was impressive in opening her account over C&D, Kirby on board.

Plumpton 2.40
VIOLIN DAVIS 1.43 betfair
Sticks out in this race as the class horse, the form horse, and has taken to fences well after being a decent horse over hurdles. Giving away a lot of weight to all other runners but should be just too good in this Novices chase.

Plumpton 3.40
JUPITER REX 2.38 betfair
This could be a non-runner and if it is look at Plumpton 2.10 and LEVIATHAN 2.54. Jupiter Rex is the horse in form, the horse on the up, the horse that just has so much more scope than any of these others today.

Wolverhampton 2.30
CARDINAL 7.6 betfair

I am siding with this one in a competitive field, so many are in receipt of weight for their recent wins. Hayley Turner on board Cardinal will give it a good run – that I can be sure off.

DOUBLE

Kempton 3.20

If non-runner take Plumpton 2.10: LEVIATHAN 2.54

      PLUMPTON 3.40

The Gossmoor Yank showed he retained ability over hurdles after a long absence for Paul Nicholls last season, but disappointing since, offering little over fences last twice. Risky in first-time cheekpieces.

Digger Gets Lucky has been lightly raced in recent years, winning 27f handicap chase at Wincanton in November 2011. May have needed last month’s reappearance and been given a chance in the weights.

Sole Agent was just touched off in this 12 months ago but raced just 3 times since, third in hunter at Lingfield a fortnight ago. Wouldn’t be biggest surprise to see him bounce back with blinkers refitted.

Global Warming is often subject of market support, and retains most of his ability judged on keeping-on fourth at Wincanton (21f) in December. Disappointing back over 3m at Exeter next time, though.

Jupiter Rex hasn’t looked back of late, completing hat-trick back over fences at Ludlow (3m) last week, pulling clear. Unpenalised for that and big chance of getting 4-timer up.

Miss Fleur put up 2 good placed efforts in a row for a change the last twice, pulling clear with winner at Lingfield (3m) last time. Worth keeping on side.

Massini Sunset is a temperamental sort who bolted up at Chepstow in March. Mixed bag since, doing a tad better when third at that venue in January, but a moody display since at Lingfield.

Quartz de Montceau has gone 2 from 3 for Diana Grissell, following up Folkestone victory with all-the-way success in 3-runner C&D event last month. This is tougher.

Whitcombe Spirit won over fences here (17f) a year ago for Jamie Poulton. Struggled in the main this season, though, and others look safer even with promising course-winning amateur in the saddle.

      1. Jupiter Rex
      2. Sole Agent
      3. Miss Fleur

Jupiter Rex is on a roll and can get the 4-timer up from the same mark as for last week’s impressive Ludlow success. Diana Grissell has a strong hand and last year’s second Sole Agent could be interesting, while Miss Fleur has found a bit of consistency and may be involved again.

      IN PLAY/TWO RACES FROM PLUMPTON
      —————–

Race: 15:10 Plumpton- 2m Handicap Hurdle

Specific Pace Hint: With no shortage of likely pace-forcers, Sir Fredlot may need to be ridden further back than in its recent starts: Just Beware tends to race further back than some and could be suited by having a good pace to run at.

Individual Price Hint: Star Of Massini traded at 10% or less of BSP and 50% or less of BSP on 2 of its last 5 starts: Engai traded at 10% or less of BSP twice and 50% or less of BSP twice on 4 of its last 5 starts.

      Race: 15:40 Plumpton- 3m 2f Handicap Chase

Specific Pace Hint: Sole Agent is unlikely to have an easy time if adopting customary prominent position: The likelihood of an honest pace may tee things up for one coming from further back, with Jupiter Rex a possible beneficiary.

Individual Price Hint: Sole Agent traded at 10% or less of BSP, 25% or less of BSP and 50% or less of BSP on 3 of its last 5 starts: Global Warming traded at 25% or less of BSP and 50% or less of BSP on 2 of its last 4 starts.

Short Priced Hint: Jupiter Rex traded at a high of 11.00 and BSP of 4.75 when winning last time, a race in which it raced towards the rear.
      ——————————–

It’s not the most sparkling of cards at Plumpton today, but there are winners to be had, and hopefully I’ve found one whose claims are much clearer than some poor form figures would imply. The horse in question is Southway Queen (16:40), who has achieved very little under Rules, but who has a lowly mark as a result, and several reasons for thinking improvement is in the offing. The mare is by obscure West Country sire Morpeth, and an own-sister to Southway Star, who has won 7 times for trainer Susan Gardner having (like most by the sire) started off with Jimmy Frost. Like her sister, Southway Queen was well held in bumpers for the patient Frost yard and had one fruitless spin over hurdles before moving on, and in the intervening years has been quite successful in points, winning 2 and finishing second 4 times. A belated return to timber this winter has seen her make the requisite appearances to gain a handicap mark, and those runs came over inadequate trips, and without recourse to a hard ride on either occasion. Suitably qualified, she now steps up to 21f and gets the help of a tongue tie for the first time under Rules. Those factors are likely to see considerable improvement, and the shrewd, but underrated Gardner could see boost an already healthy 17% strike-rate in handicaps over recent years.

The main danger, to my eyes at least, is topweight Midnight Belle, who travelled notably well before failing to stay 3m under a huge weight at Taunton last time. The winner of that contest, Tarabela, followed up at Towcester yesterday, and it would be best to mark that performance up. Lady of Geneva kept on stoutly in a 3¼m handicap at Huntingdon last time, and may do better, but she clearly lacks pace, and this sharp track and drop in trip aren’t sure to suit.

One who looks sure to be suited by the nature of the Plumpton circuit, and indeed by a move away from heavy ground is Tornado In Milan, who runs in the 2m handicap hurdle at 15:10. Evan Williams’ Irish import looked a good prospect on his bumper debut for Eoin Doyle, but his keen nature has prevented him from building on that promise, for all he scored on his UK debut. He’s been hinting at better in recent starts, though, and a third to the much-vaunted Mr Mole at Taunton last time represented his best effort over hurdles. With runner-up Home Run going close next time, and fourth-placed Marie des Anges bolting up over fences, the form looks solid. That came in a hood, which is retained in a bid to keep this excitable sort settled, and Tornado In Milan is capable of running these ragged if ridden aggressively, which is admittedly not usually the Paul Moloney way.

Of the opposition, Star of Massini is still a maiden, and may prove flattered by getting the run of things at Kempton last time, while it would be dangerous to assume that Right Stuff was really back in the groove when winning a Flat claimer at Lingfield last time in which sole serious opponent La Estrella wasn’t seen to best effect. Brody Bleu is interesting on handicap bow for rookie handler Robert Walford, but the merit of his easy point win a year ago is hard to gauge (to put it kindly), and a long absence is hardly cause for optimism.

      Both at Plumpton
Back Southway Queen in the 16:40 @ 8.6 (NAP)
Back Tornado In Milan in the 15:10 @ 4.3 (NB)
      ————————————

It all starts at 15:10, in Plumpton’s two-mile handicap hurdle. There are a couple that catch the eye, including the Gary Moore-trained Right Stuff who has fallen to a good mark, though the most interesting of all is Tornado In Milan. A useful bumper performer, Evan Williams’ charge has shaped better than the result on both starts in handicaps (both at Taunton) thus far, beaten only by a resurgent type on the first occasion and again failing to settle adequately when third in a strong race of its type last time. This contest probably won’t take quite as much winning and, should Tornado In Milan settle, he looks the likeliest to score racing off the same mark.

The handicap hurdle over an extended 25 furlongs an hour later looks a far weaker affair, that fact being a significant part of the basis for selecting Hero’s Call. She hasn’t shown any concrete form as yet, but she’s often left the impression that it’ll all drop right one day (she was taken to race very wide last time) and there must be a chance that this will be that day. Dropped 6 lb since her last run, now sitting on a lowly BHA mark of 75 and, with her opposition as poor as it is, Hero’s Call wouldn’t need to prove herself far in advance of such a mark to break her maiden here.

We make a drastic change of tack for SmartPlays number three, switching to Kempton’s polytrack and a useful mile handicap thereon at 16:20. It’s a fairly competitive affair, as you’d expect, though top weight Guest of Honour looks a worthy favourite and well worth a bet on despite fairly short odds. He basically could be destined for a higher grade, taking big strides forward on his last two starts to win a maiden at Wolverhampton followed by a handicap over today’s C&D which featured a number of similarly-unexposed sorts. Guest of Honour ran out a fairly comfortable winner that day and, truth be told, probably doesn’t have as strong opposition today, despite their greater numbers. He’s been raised a fairly lenient 6 lb for his last success and could scarcely have more going for him.

Back Tornado In Milan @ 4.3 in the 15:10 Plumpton
      Back Hero’s Call @ 9.0 in the 16:10 Plumpton
Back Guest of Honour @ 2.4 in the 16:20 Kempton
      ——————————–

      KEMPTON
      ——-

14:20 – Not many of these make all that much appeal so we can be fairly confident in selecting Tidy Affair as an opening leg banker. The four-year-old had tumbled in the weights prior to bolting up at Wolverhampton a week ago and a penalty incurred for that success is unlikely to prevent a follow up given the form he was capable of earlier in his career.

14:50 – This looks fairly competitive and it is something of a worry that there may not be that much pace on, possibly resulting in something of a bunched finish; with that in mind we will select two, namely Amana and Bridge That Gap. The first mentioned has been fairly lightly raced of late and was arguably unlucky to not win over C&D last Wednesday, so should go close here off the same mark, whilst Bridge That Gap improved to notch his second win when scoring at Lingfield earlier this month and seems sure to give a good account despite racing from a 5 lb higher mark.

15:20 – Another competitive event awaits us here and, although toying with the idea of banking upon Amethyst Dawn given that there are three places on offer and she is unexposed as a sprinter, it is probably sensible to include Rose Garnet as well, with that one expected to bounce back having seemingly failed to handle the fibresand last time.

15:50 – Officer In Command is likely to prove popular following his win over C&D last time but he isn’t certain to get the strong pace that suits ideally so we will instead side with Alhaban and Exceedexpectations. The first mentioned shaped much better than the bare result on return from a 5 month absence at Lingfield recently, likely to have gone close but for meeting trouble on the turn, and he could well make amends for that reversal here, whilst Exceedexpectations is pretty consistent on the all-weather and seems sure to give it a good go.

16:20 – Prince Of Burma makes plenty of appeal at a decent price but for Placepot purposes we are going to side solely with Guest Of Honour, who looks potentially smart and could prove far too good for his rivals.

16:50 – Four runner races are the bane of Placepot hunters’ lives, as we are usually faced with the prospect of burning lines unnecessarily by including them all in a bid to land the spoils or taking a chance on the most likely winner. Today we’re going to take a novel approach by selecting both Line Of Reason and Poet’s Prospect, who look set to do battle for the win, and hope that neither of the outsiders thwart our efforts.

I always put the reults on for my selections everyday, normally can be found at the bottom of the thread, if i have time i sometimes post results straight after the race has finished, all depends how busy i am in the day, but results can always be found, even if i’m having a bad day ;) ;)

Dave, as you know I don’t really get involved in the racing, might have a chance if there were 10 days in the week. Milesey does usually put the results and where his selections finish but for anyone interested in looking back nothing is deleted from the site so you can search the archives.

Smad Place is firmly on course for a second crack at the World Hurdle on March 14…

The six-year-old finished third behind Big Buck’s in the World Hurdle last year but with that rival sidelined by injury the three-mile crown appears an open contest this term.

Trainer Alan King has limited Smad Place to just two outings this term, with a disappointing effort at Wetherby on his return followed by a better performance when second to Reve de Sivola in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot.

Smad Place has not run since that Grade 1 in December as he has shown his best form on a decent surface, but King reports his charge in fine form at home.

“He’s very much (on course for Cheltenham),” said the Barbury Castle handler.

“I toyed with the idea of running him (in Sunday’s National Spirit Chase at Fontwell) but with there being only two and a half weeks to the Festival, we decided not to as he is a horse who can take a little bit of time after his races.

“We would definitely like to see some better ground at Cheltenham, but he is on target.”

Smad Place currently trades at 20.0 for the World Hurdle, with Oscar Whisky heading the market.

First selection is Leviathan who runs in the 14:10 at Plumpton. The Venetia Williams-trained six-year-old has been backed from a high of 3.0 in to 2.5. Rated 92 on the flat, Leviathan has shown plenty of promise so far this season for his new trainer. The selection was four lengths behind subsequent grade 1 winner Pendra on his hurdles debut but followed that up with a disappointing performance next time out on heavy ground. His latest run also came on heavy ground when beaten a length-and-a-quarter into second by Tominator over this trip. Leviathan should relish the better ground and will benefit from the experience of three runs over hurdles.

Staying at Plumpton for the next back selection which comes in the form of Manshoor in the 15:10 who has been backed from 36.0 in to 11.0. The 2011 course and distance winner is now 5lbs lower than when scoring at Lingfield over this trip in November 2011. He has been very disappointing since then but the yard scored on Saturday and a better run can be expected today.

Lay of the day runs at Wolverhampton in the 15:30 where, from a low of 2.3, Waving is now available at 3.9. The hat-trick seeking 4yo has made it two from two since a recent breathing operation. However with a 4lb rise for the recent success, and against two progressive mounts that have been very well backed, today could be the day to lay the selection.

    HORSE RACING TIPS

    TUESDAY 26TH FEBRUARY 2013

    LEICESTER 3.00

Noble Witness was eased in weights prior to regaining winning thread at Catterick (25f) in December, but well held off revised mark since, and this no easier.

Nom de Guerre has only been seen three times since opening chasing account at Wincanton (25f) in April 2010, proving he retains ability when second over C&D last time, and can’t rule out.

Not So Sure Dick bumped into Hunt Ball on a couple of occasions last year but offered little on belated return recently.

Power Pack Jack was a three-time winner over fences in 2010/11, but overall profile decidedly inconsistent, plenty more lows than highs. Others more solid.

Franklin Roosevelt was blinkered (back on) when winning handicap hurdle last spring for Warren Greatrex. Off the mark over fences with easy win at Southwell last week and sure to go well again under a penalty.

Basil Fawlty’s chances over hurdles often ruined by refusal to settle, though not given hard time both starts over fences. Looks stable number 2, though.

Lemon’s Gent landed a gamble sole start in bumpers at Ludlow in May 2011, but no better than modest form in 4 tries over hurdles. Showed more in cheekpieces on second start over fences but more required.

Abbey Dore gained fourth win over fences in the mud at Fontwell (3¼m) in January 2011. Good second off a higher mark when in April that year, but well held on belated reurn recently.

Thorncliffer was tongue tied when opening chasing account at Wetherby (25f) in December under this rider. Failed to complete next 2 starts but still early days with him.

VERDICT: Franklin Roosevelt was an impressive winner last week and a penalty may not be enough to prevent a follow up. Nom de Guerre and Thorncliffer can make a place.

    FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT 1.8 betfair

    Leicester 5.00
    QUINTE DU CHATELET 3.5 betfair
On official rating, the horse to beat in this race, the market wouldn’t suggest that though. Maybe because over fences this horse has really struggled, but off a nice mark today for this handicap chase and on hurldes form is my pick for this race.

    Catterick 2.50
    TOUBEERA 1.99 betfair
For the in form yard of Venetia Willaims, Aidan Coleman on board, this pairing have a great strike rate. Finished 3rd last time out in a listed event, behind two very classy horses, nothing in this field today would scare me and should be good enough to win this race.

    Catterick 3.50
    BUTHELEZI 2.2 betfair
Against lesser opposition today, after being very dissapointing last time out, has been put back among novices today.

    Catterick 4.50
NO WAY HOZAY 2.3 / THE FOX’S DECREE 2.74 betfair
Two horses i really like, NO WAY HOZAY carrying a weight rise for completing the hat-trick last time out will be the one to beat, didn’t know when it was beaten last time out and came back determined to win.
THE FOX’S DECREE, back to fences today, carrying less weight and off a mark of 91, will be in with a great shout in this race, i can’t side with either and will just sit back and hope for a great race.

    Lingfield 2.40
    MISLEADING PROMISE 1.8 betfair
Officially rated the top horse in this race, is in alot better form then the rest of these runners, and should prove very tough to beat.

    Lingfield 4.40
I will personally be laying STAR OF ROHM (LAY 1.79) in this race, and i hope Frank Spencer in the saddle won’t dissapoint today, has lost me so much money in the past backing horses with Frank on board so i hope today by not winning this race he will win me some money. I am going to side with SIBAYA 2.38 on debut today with Jim Crowley on board.

    Lingfield 5.10
    BROXBOURNE 1.94 betfair
Massive raise of 21lb for her hat-trick, still going to be a tough horse to beat today, not alot of class anywhere else in this field so even with the weight rise i can’t see anything getting near today.

      ha ha.

you can give me a game if you like ;) ;)

      OK, I put my £1000 on Bale at 9-2 so that’s £5500 and I’ll put £4000 on Everton -1.

    • Mr Fixit 11 years ago

Milesey, the Auxerre prices does look big. The only factor I can see against the away win is the fact their to scorer Sanogo is injured but Sedan are poor and haven’t won at home since October.
