EUROPA LEAGUE betting isn't the easiest to get your head round. Some sides will be weakened while others will consider themselves through after winning the away leg.

In other words it's a mindful so keep stakes to a minimum on a night that won't always go to plan.

As new sponsors of this column I'll be quoting Unibet's odds for each of my lines (where they have odds available). You can claim a £20 free bet when you open an account at Unibet via this site.

So here are my top tips for tonight including a both teams to score fourfold picked by my hamster that I'm putting purely because it's been requested. The group games were good for this market but only eight out of 16 of the first legs produced both scoring and it's likely to be a similar ratio tonight so if you can pick them good luck.

And remember games are a mixture of 6pm and 8.05pm kick-offs.

Remember last week when there were only a small number of odds-on homes in the Europa League first leg ties? Well naturally tonight is the polar opposite. Tonights return legs are littered with short priced home favourites. As a result, it’s going to be difficult to win serious cash. Usually when this happens, the first port of call is the handicap markets, however this could prove a false economy as very few of tonights favourites need to even score at all, never mind score a glut of goals to take you through your handicap threshold.

My advice would be proceed with caution. Don’t get greedy and start compiling an exhaustive list of home ‘bankers’ as there will invariably be shocks when teams roatate and/or have nothing to play for. Bilbao certainly look good as they need to win and are also in fine form. Schalke need a goal so should be looked upon favourably. Sides with a one goal lead such as Valencia and PSV will surely look to score at least one to seal their progresion although be wary on the handicaps as after the first goal, the matches could be played at a slower pace.

Marc, we’re in total agreement. I’ve issued said warning with my piece and Europa League should be played for small stakes. Anyone who puts all the shorties in is asking for trouble and I don’t like backing teams who don’t need a win. Atletico Madrid, Man Utd, Besiktas and Metalist are four who fall into the category. Schalke should win while Valencia are up against a weakened side.

    • Marc Currie 12 years ago

Yeah totally Paul. Im looking at the four sides I mentioned – Bilbao, Valencia, Schalke and PSV although I may drop one for a treble. As you noted with the Mulgrew bet, a wins a win. That’s what we’re looking at tonight. Very confident on both Spaniards. Watched the full 90 on Sunday as Bilbao beat my beloved Malaga 3 – 0 although that was hardly a fair reflection on the game. Interestingly they rested Llorente, who didn’t come on until the second half. Perhaps an indication they are taking tonights tie very seriously. The Russians are no mugs, they have invested a considerable amount money in their squad but Bilbao should be too strong at home.

With regards a potential mini shock, any candidates in mind? How many times have we seen a side win heavily in the first leg, only for the return leg to fizzle out a 1 – 1 draw?!

Marc, happy to stick with my fourfold to be honest.

  4. Steven Duncan 12 years ago

How about. Athletico Madrid -1. Valencia ht/ft. Club Brugge. Shalke PAOK. Man utd. Metalist

  5. steven 12 years ago

totally agree, this comp can be tough at times to pick winners, hopefully with teams “needing” to score you would generally expect a few goals tonight. my only bet tonight is pauls BTTS, all teams mentioned usually find the net when they play. so fingers crossed. anderlecht should be too strong for AZ at home.

    • Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Steven, one game out of seven of the early kick-offs saw both score. Kind of sums it up at the moment.

  6. craig alves 12 years ago

    hey fella,

    what u think of……………..

laval dnb 2/1 v monaco away 2moz nite?

    cheers fella

    • Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Busy getting the weekend stuff sorted out, will have a look if I get a chance.

    • Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Hi, had a look at the Monaco v Laval game tonight. Laval draw no bet could be the way to go even though they haven’t drawn in nine. Monaco are struggling and if I had to pick a winner it would be Laval by a single goal. Best bet tonight is probably Borussia M’gladbach at home to Hamburg with some bookies offering 3-4 on a side with eight wins in nine games.

Leicester was a great tip again tonight Mr Fixit.

I was on at 6/5 and I’m calling it a Super Single.

    • Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Eric, they did the business. Fourfold up with five minutes to go so fingers crossed.

    • Eric 12 years ago

Tough luck with Schalke Mr F.

I don’t like the Europa League. I’ve lost too many times on it.

  11. Willie McGuire 12 years ago

1/4 shots Schalke 1-1 against Plzen who were down to 10 men after 60mins.
Thats not on. Some of the results this midweek with hugely short priced favs not winnin is piss poor. This type of week makes me want to chuck the footie bettin :(

    • Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Willie, you’re dead right. One reason I warn punters to be wary of Europa League. Schalke ahead in extra time, typical!

  12. David Paterson 12 years ago

    Hi Paul,

Just wondering if there was any update on the free bet I won. It was a bonkers bet with william hill. I havent heard anything since the last time I mentioned it.

    thanks

  13. Willie McGuire 12 years ago

Paul with the quality Schalke have, against Vik Plzen they should be winning comfortably at home hence the 1/4.
Serves us all right for including such a short price in our accers. Why is it tho that its always the shortest price team that beats us? Charlton 2/7 and schalke 1/4 :o(

    • Mr Fixit 12 years ago

Willie, I don’t like going below 1-2 but on accumulators it’s easy to throw in a smaller price when you think they are almost certs. I had 3-10 on Schalke but they beat me nevertheless.

  14. David Paterson 12 years ago

    Menty say,

Have you ever considered putting up tips on the Ice Hockey markets?(NHL Specifically) If you look at the odds on offer they are very generous at times. Even something as simple as picking out 2 teams to win the first period alone, a £10 stake can return approx £100.

    • Mr Fixit 12 years ago

David, sounds pretty good but I don’t even watch the hockey never mind try to punt on it.

  15. David Paterson 12 years ago

I suppose you have a point there. I watch a lot of hockey so that’s why I don’t mind having a punt on it. The other night 50p bet was returning £467.56 and it was busted by 1 goal. Was an over/under 5.5 goals in each of the games that night. (8 in total)

    • Mr Fixit 12 years ago

David, sounds like there is a bit of value. As the site grows we’re adding sports so maybe somewhere down the line we’ll get someone on board to cover US sports. Could be a bit of profit there from what you’re saying.
