THE golden oldies are rolling back the years at the Welsh Open as John Higgins and Mark Williams both swept through to today's semis.

Higgins is now just two wins away from claiming a record fourth Welsh title and after sinking compatriot Stephen Maguire the Scot now faces young upstart Luca Brecel in the last four. The 19-year-old Belgian has already shocked world No.1 Mark Selby and is 8-5 at Sportingbet to reach the Final at the expense of Higgins, who's chalked up at 1-2 by Betfred.

In the other semi-final Welshman Williams – now joint title favourite with Higgins at 7-4 at Skybet – is 1-2 at Betfred while his opponent Ben Woollaston is the 7-4 outsider at bet365.

At the Cricket World Cup it's Afghanistan v Sri Lanka and in the early hours a clash that could be a cracker as India (13-8 at bet365) take on South Africa (4-7, Stanjames).

Simona Halep is favourite for glory at the Dubai Tennis Championships where she faces Karolina Pliskova in today's final. The Romanian is 2-5 at William Hill against the Czech ace, a 9-4 underdog at Skybet.

There's also plenty more sporting highlights on a packed Saturday of action so post your tips and chat here and good luck with your bets.

Decent shout indeed Ellis. And well done with the treble yesterday. A bumpy ride but got there in the end!

I’m always a little wary of Karlovic re-producing match after match but he seems to be in great form this week and should have too much for Mannarino. Monfils will win if he doesn’t have a wobble.

I’d have to agree, really fancied SA to do well before the tournament and I think this should be the match they show their intent. Only bet I’m having on this one though is over 48.5 boundaries, as both teams have incredible batting lineups and I fancy the bat to dominate this one

  11. Harry 9 years ago

Reason being is that you can never rule out kohli and Dhoni etc of getting big scores against anyone, so I’d rather not back a winner, although I feel SA should be too strong

Jordan just read the Peterston interview from yesterday and looks like he will be on his way, if he had his way he would end up at Dallas wonder if they fancy giving us de Marco Murray as a transfer. That’s unlucky, willhill only bookies with that market at the moment, keep an eye on it though as one of them might open the market later. Only other bet I could suggest for you would be for a century to be scored in the match which I’ve seen tipped and talked about in a few other places too. The thinking is along the same lines as the boundaries bet to be honest with both teams have very strong batting lineups. It’s currently 10/11 with bet365.

    Rolling Acca Leg 3:

    Halep d Pliskova
    Errani d Larsson

I didn’t think i’d be backing Halep to win at any point this week, so unconvincing did I find some of her performances. However, she has lots going for her here. She played her best tennis of the week in her last two sets to take Wozniaki down. She will be fresher than Pliskova, who has played a lot of tennis over the last two weeks. While Pliskova is the sort of player who can trouble Halep due to her placement and weight of shot, she must be knackered. Her serve has deteriorated a little as the week’s progressed, and she has been playing aggressive baseliners all week. Halep will make her hit a ton more balls that any of those did, assuming she plays a decent match, and I’d be surprised if Pliskova had the energy or movement around the court to hang with her for the duration of this one. If she serves well it could be close for a while, but Halep’s extra energy, consistency and experience of winning finals should help her get over the line. I also have Pliskova’s performance against Suarez Navarro last week fresh in my mind, where she absolutely crumbled against a steady player late in the week. There’s a chance we could see the same again, and that’s what’s ultimately pushed me towards backing Halep for the win ahead of backing over 20.5 games.

Errani might have had a scare in her last match but I’m really finding it hard to see how Larsson can hurt her. Haddad Maia is a six foot lefty who has more power than Errani and was no doubt spurred no by the confidence of youth. Larsson doesn’t have any of those advantages, and Errani just does everything better than her. The pair have met 5 times before and Errani has won comfortably 2-0 every time. Those were all on hard courts, and While Larsson is a better player on clay, so is Errani.

    Staked: £22.34
    Potential returns: £38.72
(with BV, will be slightly more or less depending on your bookie)

    Good luck!

  31. Juan 9 years ago

Anyone fancy Young to beat Tomic in the tennis later? Won their only previous meeting just last week & seems to be in very good form

    Any thoughts Ad??

  32. Ellis 9 years ago

    Juan ,

Im not Ad but I’ll give my advice. I won’t be backing either player but personally I prefer the look of Tomic. He seems focused and he is finally making his surge towards the top 20 after years of being spoken about as the next aussie big thing

He is very effective behind his first serve and his confidence is high. He should have enough to get past brown

  33. Ellis 9 years ago

    Young sorry

  34. Juan 9 years ago

Thanks Ellis will maybe steer clear of that one, do you think Fognini can keep it close against Nadal? Or will he blow his top & suffer a good thrashing?!

  35. Ad 9 years ago

I agree. I like Tomic in that one. It’s never guaranteed that he will produce his best but he’s looked really good this week and I fancy him to get revenge for last week’s defeat. Fabio could keep it close against Rafa if he is on it but he probably won’t be. He has a pretty woeful record against the top players. But Rafas not been at his best this week and didn’t finish till the very early hours this morning so you never know. I doubt Fog believes he can win, but he’s looked quite fired up this week.

  36. Ad 9 years ago

If you do bet on the Rafa v Fognini match go for over 19.5 games rather than fognini handicap. I made that mistake with Cuevas last night. Thought he would make a game of it but because he got beat 6-0 in the third my bet lost. Fab is more than capable of completely collapsing for a set or two even if he nicks one.

    Wigan warriors v brisbane

Chance for revenge for the wigan boys tonight after last year’s disaster down under and whilst wigan coach wane has been talking up the importance of this game brisbane on the other hand have turned up with a lot of injuries and a coach saying the result isn’t important it’s all about game time for him. So am going with my wigan boys

    Wigan to win -4 10/11
    Gelling first try 11/1
    Wigan over 3.5 tries
    8/11
    Tomkins anytime 17/10

Evening Guys Wigan Warriors v Brisbane Broncos

It is leg 2 of the world club series, and Wigan are fancied slightly by the bookies. They are a 2 point favourite at 5/6 Coral. I think even though Wigan will be without their leader Sean O’loughlin, that will be a huge miss. Dan Sargion is back and so to is playmaker Matty Smith, his dual with Broncos Ben Hunt could be pivotal tonight. Its a big night to for Wigan scrum half George Williams, the Warriors youngster as a ton of potential and it is a big stage for him to show case is talents.

Brisbane have had a few injuries and have left the talented Darius Bryd, Great Britain centre Jack Reed, Matt Gillett and Dale Copley at home. Justin Hodges, Josh McGuire and Corey Parker are just some of the star names who have travelled. Brisbane are fancied to bounce back from a poor season last season and be serious contenders in the NRL.

With the Warriors three quarters all playing together for the first time this year, I will be on the two Warriors flyers Josh Charnley 1/1 and Joe Burgess 11/10 skybet. Charnley was the competition top try scorer last season and Joe Burgess is one of the game bright young stars and with his centre partner Sarginson back can score in this club series for the second year in a row.

WIGAN -2 TO BEAT BRISBANE 5/6
    CHARNLEY TO SCORE 1/1
    BURGESS TO SCORE 11/10

WIGAN TO WIN 1/1 (CORAL SPECIAL £20 MAX BET)

Good luck if your having a bet

Im not so confident on a wigan win, these aussies are class, but i do think we will see a lot of points tonight so im on over 38.5 total points at 8/11

  44. thechief 9 years ago

Shotty, I thought St George were value getting a 6pt start last night, but Wigan if they don’t have a man sent off in the first 2 mins like the last time they played a big match, can win this. I think they will wear them down physically and get the win, hopefully. Sick of losing to the Aussies. Good luck mate enjoy.

  51. Harry 9 years ago

Mr F, Honda, you’re both right but it’s only 1 point and I’ve been watching England cricket for years and not seem them in this state of mind. The worst thing about it is they’ve gone from world beaters and ranked #1 so they don’t know how to react in these situations and the mentality is all wrong. I still think at 8/1 it’s worth 1 point as weirder things have happened. Also, as bad as the Scottish attack is, if they do skittle us then there could be a point where the cash out or cover is tempting

  52. Juan 9 years ago

Should have gone with my gut! Didn’t see the game, did Young step it up a level or did Tomic throw it away?

    • Ad 9 years ago

I only saw bits and pieces but my impression was Tomic should have won 2-0. He should have broken at 4-4 in the second but ended up missing his chance then playing sloppy and getting broken himself next game. He had chances to break back in the final set but couldn’t convert them. Played to passively. I’m glad I didn’t bet on it.

  53. V P 9 years ago

Harry I don’t agree, England have never been good at ODIs

  54. V P 9 years ago

Although I can’t judge what their quality was before my time I’m 20

  55. Harry 9 years ago

VP I’m 22, and firstly I was talking about England cricket in general as it’s the same people running it and the same players more or less across all three platforms, so the mentality is the same.
Secondly, were you not watching us in 2012 when we were ranked number 1 in the world in all 3 platforms of the game and smashing Australia and India etc? As well as finishing runners up in 3 ODI world cups over the years and winning the t20 world cup in 2010. Wouldn’t say they’ve never been good mate

  56. dave 9 years ago

last time I can remember england getting to the ODI final was in the 90’s

they will probably beat Scotland but will never win tournament

they don’t know who their best team is

play guys better suited to test cricket

    don’t play a specialist spinner

are tactically light years behind the other teams

bets to avoid this game for betting

  57. Shotty 9 years ago

TheChief.. was a really tough game as expected but my god the quality was terrible, that pitch didnt help either! Thought there would be a few points but turned into a scrappy game gutted wigan lost too!

  58. V P 9 years ago

Ok I said it wrong, I’m talking specifically ODIs, they’ve done ok in short periods and never usually away from England. They’ve never been consistently good in ODIs because they lose to everyone outside of English conditions. Don’t worry I remember them taking the number one test ranking off India in that series

Punting, the Slinger Malinga debate has been going on for a good 7-8 years haha. It’s technically legal though as he doesn’t bend his arm more than the 15° allowed and his arm is straight at release. In fact it’s almost impossible to bowl the way he does with the same accuracy, it takes a lot of skill not to keep firing down wides. It just looks illegal as it’s so unique and unorthodox

  66. sah1991 9 years ago

NHL: St Louis Blues ODDS: 2.1

The Blues are going to have to contend with some quality scorers in this game, but coming off of a strong game against Boston they should be primed for it. The Blues are averaging 3 goals per game as a team while giving up 2 to the opposition.

    Fabio Fognini….Unbelievable!!!

  68. Capone31 9 years ago

Ad what were his odds to win when he went 6-1 down in the 1st?

    • Ad 9 years ago

I’ve no idea Capone. Big! I imagine you couldve got around 15/1 but that’s a complete guess.

  69. V P 9 years ago

I remember bowling a good length straight ball with a Malinga action in a net once it’s one of my great achievements

  70. JimJams 9 years ago

Capone – The odds with William Hill were 16/1 at the time, and I snapped him up at that, but completely chanced it. Although, I did have a good feeling about him before the match started, that soon disappeared as soon as I saw Nadal had thrashed him in that opening set.
Anyway, very happy about it; all I need now is for Tottenham, Everton and my mighty Reds (Liverpool) to win tomorrow, in addition to Raal’s overs goal tips in the European games, and I’ll have made a decent return.
