THE racing boys have had their two days holiday and return with a bang on a packed Boxing Day card.

Our man Johnb has picked out his selections and reasoning has been added.

He says: “The good thing about so many meetings on Boxing Day is the bookies unwittingly give great value and my three selections are probably double the odds they should be.”

Kempton 1.30
Max Ward 13-2 Skybet, Paddy Power

Wolverhampton 3.45
Mythical Madness 3-1 NAP/NB William Hill (double stake)

4.15
Lightscameraction 9-2 Coral

Also 3×0.5pt doubles & 1×0.5pt treble Coral at odds 5-1, 11-4 and 9-2

Mythical Madness

With three runs at this course, two wins and a second beaten a head Mythical Madness loves this surface and is the clear pick on current form. The yard are in decent form and he is still improving.

Lightscameraction

A favourite of this thread and myself on the all-weather in the past, Lightscameraction’s form wavered slightly on the turf in good races but can and should bounce back on the all-weather.

Max Ward

Drop down in grade after struggling against Altior and Charbel last time but wasn’t disgraced. Could easily bounce back to form here on Boxing Day and is a massive price as the bookies have looked into his last run too much. He is a confident selection after his debut run over fences which was even more impressive as it was after 843 days off the course.

The King George is a race to watch as it sees Cue Card v the novice Thistlecrack. Everyone knows what I think of Thistlecrack as I was touting him as the 2017 Gold Cup winner well over a year ago and advised him at 20-1. He will have to be something special to beat Cue Card this early in his chasing career but is something special and will be one of the greatest chasers ever seen. I saw it when he was hurdling and knew he was going to be even better over fences. A defeat wouldn’t end his chances in the Gold Cup as he is still so inexperienced and Cue Card on form is the worthy favourite as Thistlecrack is too short and has no value but I do expect Thistlecrack to win and win well.

Antepost Tips

  • 1000 Guineas 2017 – PROMISE TO BE TRUE 20-1 Betfred (now 25-1)
  • 2000 Guineas 2017 – CHURCHILL 20-1 bet365 (now 6-4)
  • 2017 Derby – CHURCHILL 33-1 Racebets (now 7-1)
  • 2000 Guineas 2017 – BLUE POINT 14-1 racebets (now 33-1)

Johnb says: “I have already advised Churchill for next year’s 2000 Guineas & Derby – he has been really impressive this season and my view is he will get even better next year.

“Blue Point on the other hand is harder to call for how he will progress next year. If he trains on then in my view it’s a straight fight between Blue Point & Churchill but in the Derby Churchill is the only horse for me – he gives me the same excitement as Golden Horn did.

“But to answer my question earlier the most impressive horse I have seen this year is BLUE POINT with Churchill and Annie Power a close second and third.”

This is the biggest test for Thistlecrack yet. He hasn’t come up against an opponent of Cue Card’s Quality in his chasing career yet. Cue Card is proven in this race. Personally, I think it’s too soon for Thistlecrack and expect Cue Card to do the Double here.
Regardless of the result I cannot wait to watch this one.

It doesn’t surprise me that the money has come for Mythical Madness already, he is by far the best bet of the day and was a massive price at 3/1
Now a best price of 11/4

2-05 kempton amore alato nap 11-1
Very impressive last time, jumped like a stag.

      2-40 kempton the new one.
I expect him to beat the novice yanworth from the front, then I hope he goes for the world hurdle and not the champion again as I think 2 mile is too short now for him.

      3-15 cue card.
They won’t risk losing the million pound bonus by getting cue card beat.
I expect experience and the fact that thistlecrack has beatt nothing over chase obstacles, and not chased right handed to see cue card win by under a couple of lengths.
      Double pays 2-1 and 5-4.

The trends Thistlecrack must defy to win

FOLLOWERS of trends and those who prefer to rely on their own visual interpretation do not always see eye to eye. And the King George VI Chase is likely to be one case in point where consensus is not reached.

Thistlecrack, who is challenging reigning King George champion Cue Card for favouritism, dominated the staying hurdle ranks last season and has created a good impression over fences so far, winning all three races in novice company without needing to come off the bridle.

However, there are some key King George trends the exceptionally-talented Thistlecrack does not meet.

    Trends Thistlecrack fails to meet:

    – Eight or more chase runs, ten winners in last ten runnings
    – Won a Grade 1 chase, 10/10
    – Won a Graded chase over 2m4f to 2m6f, 10/10
    – Rated within 5lb of RPR top-rated, 9/10 (six top)

Thistlecrack has had fewer runs over fences than all of the King George winners in the past decade (admittedly five renewals were won by the same horse in Kauto Star) and many of the punters looking to oppose him believe that his lack of experience will be his downfall, particularly against a rival as solid as Cue Card, who meets all those trends.

CUE CARD Ridden by Paddy Brennan wins
Cue Card: a big King George fancy for the trends boys

However, while experience may prove important it is easy to pick holes in the validity of the other trends.

Thistlecrack has failed to win a Grade 1 chase, but that is down to opportunity rather than a lack of ability – he has not yet run in a race at the highest level over fences.

It would also seem harsh to mark down the completely unexposed winning-machine that is Thistlecrack for being rated 6lb behind Cue Card on Racing Post Ratings, just 1lb shy of meeting the trend. We simply do not know how good he could be.

The stat about winning form over 2m4f to 2m6f is an interesting one. Kempton is fairly flat and the ground is rarely too testing, so it is reasonable to assume that horses who have the speed to be effective over 2m4f to 2m6f are at an advantage compared to dour stayers. Thistlecrack has not run over shorter than 2m7f over fences, but he races with such enthusiasm and travels so strongly that you suspect it will be to his advantage if the emphasis is placed on speed.

There are some trends Thistlecrack meets:

    – Won a chase over at least 3m, 9/10
    – Aged six to nine, 9/10
    – Won at least 40 per cent of chase starts, 8/10
    – Adjusted RPR of at least 174, 10/10

The ten-year-old Cue Card meets three of those four trends but will be bidding to become just the third horse aged in double figures to win the King George since Desert Orchid triumphed at the age of 11 in 1990. Edredon Bleu and Kauto Star are the only horses to have managed the feat.

Ardent followers of trends will be rowing in with Cue Card, who matches every criteria apart from age, and that is unlikely to be a factor bearing in mind he proved as good as ever when winning the Betfair Chase just last month.

Thistlecrack does not fare well on the trends but what he does have is eight wins on the bounce, including some contemptuous drubbings of smart horses. Can he jump into the record books by becoming the first novice to win the King George, proving he is the superstar the division so desperately craves following the tragic loss of Vautour and the sidelining of Don Cossack?

We will find out on Boxing Day.

I come under the bracket of relying on my own visual interpretation rather than trends,
trends are there to be broken, they come low down in my list of criteria when looking for a winner because nothing tells you more about a horse than your own eyes,
I say it time and time again watch races, why rely on someone else’s opinion when you can watch a horse yourself.

After new year I will be visiting a few stables to enquirer about having horses trained there, I already know where I want to have horses trained but it gives me a chance to see next seasons 2yo’s in the flesh to aid my quest for more classic winners in 2018

    Evening all,
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas day. Thankfully Boxing Day is now with us and what a treat we have at Cheltenham this afternoon. While I will not be having a bet in the King George I have a feeling Cue Card will triumph but I am happy taking a watching brief. I have however looked out 6 small stake selections (1.5 points / 0.75 EW). My write ups will be shorter today I apologise.
    12.30 Wincanton – Sister Sibyl 11/4 NAP
Last time out Sister Sibyl cruised home at Towcester with plenty in hand. She went straight into my note book and looks good value today at 11/4. Last season she won on debut before being stepped straight up in class where she found it too hot but she is clearly a horse to follow given the way she jumped and travelled last month. The trip will be spot on and the ground will be fine at around 11/4 I rate her as my best chance of a Boxing Day winner.
    1.05 Wincanton – Dusky Lark 2/1
While Dusky Lark has to carry a lot of weight today at Wincanton he offers by far the best chase form on offer. Raised only 1lb for his strong second at Ascot last time Colin Tizzard looks to have found an ideal opportunity to land some price money today. Throughout his career has been highly tried and while Jaunty Inflight runs off basement weight I still fancy the class of Dusky Lark to shine through. 2/1 looks value and I can’t resist a nibble.
    1.10 Fontwell – Calva D’Honore 15/8
The curse of the bumper penalty seemed to hit Calva D’Honore two starts back as he failed to follow up on his summer bumper win at Fakenham back in October. He did run ok in 3rd but was beaten over 10 lengths – but most of you will know my thoughts on bumper penalties so strike a line through that form. On his Hurdle debut he posted a much improved effort finishing a close second to what looks like a freak winner. He jumped well and looks sure to come on for the run. Ben Pauling has been in good form lately and in a race full of exposed sorts 15/8 rates as value in my book.
    2.15 Wincanton – Mr Mix 5/2
I am willing to take a chance that Mr Mix can brush up on his jumping and finally fulfil his potential tomorrow. Last season he ran well in a number of hot races before falling in the Martin Pipe hurdle at Cheltenham when he was moving into contention. Returned in the silver trophy this season he made a number of blunders but still finished a close 5th (beaten under 3 lenghts). He is clearly a horse with a huge engine, if he can pull it together there is every chance he could stamp his class over this field tomorrow – only enhancing Paul Nichols big day record.
    2.25 Wetherby – Only Orsenfoolsies 12/1 EW
This once consistent flat performer lost his way on the level this season, but bounced back to form last time when second at Doncaster at 50/1. In his past this talented horse has ran in and won a number of good races on both codes. He was once rated 137 over hurdles and off 124 tomorrow I am happy to take an each way chance with Finian O’Toole taking a handy 5lbs off. The race does look competitive but hopefully Only Orsenfoolsies can but up a good showing.
    3.35 Wetherby – Deepsand 14/1 EW
Similar to Only Orsenfoolsies, Deepsand returned to form last time with a good second (head) on debut for Lucinda Russell. He was also once rated above 130 and am happy to take a chance that his current mark is well within reach (115). Last time the new yard seemed to work the world of good as he looked like he may hold on under a good ride from his young jockey. The same jockey rides again today (Alexander Thorne) and his 10lb stable claim gives Deepsand a very attractive race weight. In a race with a number of unexposed horses I am hopeful Deepsand can show them a thing or two about hurdling- and at least make the frame.

Many Thanks and GL to all

Going to try something new which is for punters out there that like to follow stats,
These are not part of my main Tips though and won’t count towards my stats, just the same as my shortlist horses don’t

    Johnb’s Stat for the Flat

    Wolverhampton 2:05 Street Jazz 14/1

Trainer James Given has a 24% strike rate when bringing a horse out quickly after a run,
When doing this he has had 28 winners from 118 runners giving a 61% profit,

Just remember though, because a system has shown a profit in the past doesn’t mean it will in the future,
the A/E for this stat is 1.45

A/E – A stat that indicates ‘valueness’ of a system. If the figure is above 1.00 then the system is value, or is under bet by the betting public. A figure less than 1.00 indicates the system does not offer value, is underachieving, or is over bet by the betting public.

The A/E ‘value index’ stat is an enhanced impact value type stat which can also be used instead of the ROI stat. The A stands for Actual whilst the E stands for Expected and thus the stat shows the index of actual winners to expected winners. Calculating an index this way shows ‘value’ and thus value bets, and value lays can be easily identified.
If a stat has ‘more winners than expected’ then we have found a good thing for backing. If a stat has ‘less winners than expected’ then we’ve found a weakness – an indicator of bad ‘value’ for betting purposes.
To calculate the A/E stat you need to know the actual number of winners and the expected number of winners. The first part is easy as this is the number that actually won. Calculating the expected number of winners is a bit more tricky as you need to sum up the odds of all the runners.
First, calculate the probability or ‘odds’ of winning. This is not the odds of the horse such as 3/1 but the ‘odds chance of winning’ for a 3/1 shot. Use the following formula to work out the odds chance:
    Odds of Winning = 1 / (Price + 1)
    If a horse is 3/1 the odds chance (probability) of winning = 1 / (3 + 1) = 0.25
If a horse is Evens the odds chance of winning = 1 / (1 + 1) = 0.5
Once you have calculated the odds of each runner you then add all those figures up to obtain the expected number of winners.
e.g. 100 horses go off at 3/1. The odds of a 3/1 shot winning is 0.25 so adding all 100 of those together = 25. Thus with 100 3/1 shots we would expect 25 of them to win.

The one I am most happy with is obviously Caprice D’anglais as this was the horse I spotted in France about a year ago and he was a horse I wanted to buy but it didn’t work out

But it’s still good to see him do well

Thistlecrack would be another good one as I saw his potential well over a year ago

Really confident about the Nap but it could be one of those days where my main fancies get beat and the shortlist horses win, it does happen
      Good luck

It doesn’t matter how confident you are in a horse if it’s a non trier then it won’t win, simple as

They aren’t good but If you bet correctly then poor days don’t matter,

I am confident in my own ability and there is nobody better in the uk that can spot talent from such an early stage

He’s zapped. Your 40-1 was backed and your Thistlecrack comments spot on.
You don’t need to justify yourself.

IT IS WITHOUT DOUBT THAT WHILE YOUR DAY TO DAY BETS ARE too few and far between for serious punting – such long loosing runs are impossible to win serious money – IT IS ALSO WITHOUT DOUBT THAT YOU HAVE A RARE TALENT – YOUR ANTEPOST PICKS AND KNOWLEDGE OF HORSES ARE OUTSTANDING
THE BEST I HAVE SEEN OVER 20 YEARS !!! I WOULD EMPLOY YOU IN A HEARTBEAT – just wouldnt let you near the money or any bets (apart from antepost) :-)
I have been involved with horse racing as a serious money making pursuit for over 20 years now and long since had all my bookmaker accounts closed !!!
I have never seen anyone with such a basic natural understanding of horses /style /pace etc etc
To follow you just antepost is the way for serious punters or anyone who wants to stake more than a few pounds or pence !

Your day to day picks are comical only because horse racing isnt true and straight – but then you should know that?

    Hard to believe it’s been a bad day on Boxing Day with seven winners at 40/1 14/1 5/1 7/2 15/8 11/8 4/5
But is was a very bad day with 6pts lost

If you read the comments I was asked for my shortlisted horses, I don’t normally put them up because I only advise my main selections
Thistlecrack wasn’t a main Tip because there was no value at the price,
A winner doesn’t mean value and it’s value that guarantees long term profits

    • Profile photo of Mr Fixit Author

Yeah you are often asked for those – I understand re Thistlecrack price.

    December 52.4pts up

    Tuesdays Tips

    Kempton
    1:10
Nordic Nymph 5/2 NB william hill

Nordic Nymph is an old favourite of this thread, she has won us plenty but that doesn’t mean she owes us nothing, no horse ever owes us nothing, there are no sentimental selections just selections that are expected to win.
I first advised Nordic Nymph as a double stake 12/1 Nap/Nb over two years ago when I gave a very confident write up stating that for her breeding a mark of 80 was far too low and that the step up to three miles would suit her, now she is rated 118 and I still fancy her to win,
She steps up in class yet again but with only six races in two years “five wins and a second” she still has improvement in her and it’s only her third run this year, distance and ground are yet again okay and the trainer is in decent form with his last two runners both winning.

    Chepstow
    2:40
    Unioniste 20/1 NAP william hill

The Welsh Grand National with twenty runners is on paper a brace Nap but here we have what is a very well handicapped horse in Unioniste who should love this testing course, he did win easy a 3m 2f Kelso race on heavy ground and followed it up with a second to Many Clouds at the same course,
Three disappointing runs since but the combination of going, distance and course here makes me fancy him strongly for the win

0.5pt eachway double 72.5/1 william hill
