I SUGGESTED it could be like after the Lord Mayor’s Show following Saturday’s success and that’s how it transpired.
The temptation was to go big on Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs but while I resisted that and predicted one of them wouldn’t win I didn’t expect Spurs to let me down.
So for the second Sunday running Newcastle beat me up and it’s obvious they are a team finally going in the right direction under Steve McClaren after victories against Liverpool and Spurs.
My Super Single and goals treble was beaten early by St Johnstone who were the better team against Celtic for half an hour or so but ultimately paid the penalty for missed chances.
It was a disappointing day but to put it in perspective I lost 3.2pts compared to a profit of more than 70 on Saturday and that figure won’t be dented much by playing with level stakes.
Bookies would have had a decent day with the likes of Liverpool, Spurs, Napoli, AC Milan, Ajax and Real Madrid failing to win. Strangely I’ve had much more success on longer-priced teams than shorties and I’ll need to consider why that is.
There is a big Premier League game on Monday and I’ve posted a separate preview of Leicester v Chelsea explaining the Super Single. It’s an interesting one and if you turned the table upside down that’s where you’d expect the respective sides to be sitting.
In the English Championship Blackburn will hope to extend their unbeaten run under Paul Lambert at home to Nottingham Forest and that promises to be another close contest. Rovers are on a seven-match unbeaten run and have drawn nine games this season – including five at Ewood Park.
There is a Scottish Cup clash between Wick and Linlithgow Rose scheduled subject to the weather. If it is played I’d back overs or both to score but both pay no bigger than 2-5.
In Italy two off-form sides meet as Lazio entertain Sampdoria and it’s the same situation in Portugal with Academica hosting Belenenses.
And in Turkey there is a huge Istanbul derby with Besiktas taking on Galatasaray. It’s second v fourth but it’s Gala who are in better form and have won their last five against Besiktas – four of them to nil. In fact they haven’t lost to their rivals since April 2011.
It’s tough to call and could be a draw and with players such as Mario Gomes, Burak Yilmaz and Lukas Podolski on the pitch there should be goals.
I’m starting with a Super Single and having again looked at tonight’s games and seen nothing but difficulty I’ve decided to put up a long shot before heading for boozy Xmas lunch No.2 – and after my 159-1 winner guess who’s paying?
It has to remembered this is a really long shot so keep stakes low (I’m suggesting 0.2pts unit stakes) and if you prefer do trebles and fourfolds.
