I SAID earlier football is a funny old game and results on Saturday proved it as I landed a 159-1 winner – and an early Christmas present for many.
My main bets were beaten and it was looking to be a frustrating day until my four aways hit the jackpot. Stevenage, a massive 9-2, came from behind to beat Wimbledon as did Northampton at Luton.
It was more straightforward for my Scottish picks Cowdenbeath and Stirling Albion and it all added up to a 159-1 fourfold – and I’m pleased to see many members and non-members were on it.
Although it was a long shot I advised a 1pt bet covering trebles and the fourfold so I won 73.15pts – and guaranteed profit for the month because a big win won’t change the way I punt.
My other success on the day was a both teams to score treble that returned 4-1 thanks to games at Norwich, Colchester and Bristol Rovers.
I was disappointed with my Super Single as Livingston let me down. Readers of today’s Daily Record will be happier though as they had Stevenage draw no bet at 11-4 as well as the four aways.
I’ve put the 159-1 winner to the back of my mind and started hunting for Sunday selections. There are a lot of big games and big clubs involved. An Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs treble in the Premier League will be well backed at 23-10 but with all three returning from European action there is a chance one lets us down.
West Brom will try to frustrate Liverpool and Aston Villa will hope to do what they did against Man City to the Gunners.
Newcastle ended my great run on the Super Singles last weekend when they beat Liverpool but I can’t see them following up against Spurs. For once it’s away from St James’ and secondly Spurs are in fab form as they try to maintain their push for a Champions League place.
I was impressed by Spurs as they rolled over Monaco in midweek and Harry Kane will be back after being rested and is my first-scorer shout at 3-1 with Coral.
Some people will question going against Newcastle but I watched the game last week and while they battled well there was little to suggest they’ll trouble Spurs and the win came more as a result of Liverpool’s ineptitude.
Start the treble with Spurs and add Napoli at home to Roma. They were booed off in midweek by their own fans after playing for the draw against BATE that sealed a last-16 spot in the Champion League.
That maybe highlighted a lack of confidence as they made it five games without a win. Napoli rested players in midweek but still bounced back from defeat at Bologna to beat Legia Warsaw 5-2. They’ve lost in six at home to Roma and should pick up the points here.
Complete the treble with Atletico Madrid at home to Athletic Bilbao. Atletico are keeping pace with the big two at home and in Europe and have won their last four in Europe to nil.
Bilbao haven’t netted in four visits to the Vicente Calderon and looked a little powderpuff being held 0-0 at home to Malaga last week albeit with 10 men.
Sides at shorter prices who should win include PSG at home to Lyon, Dortmund at home to Eintracht Frankfurt and Real Madrid at Villarreal. I wouldn’t put anyone off that treble but it pays just 7-5. Add Porto and at Nacional and it moves to 5-2 at Betfred.
For a goals bet I’m starting with both to score at St Johnstone v Celtic. We know that stat that tells us all but one Saints game have brought up the market this season and they are going along nicely in fourth place.
This will be tough for Celts and they may drop points but having conceded in five of their last six the best bet looks to be both to score at 21-20 with 888sport.
Add both to score at Sheffield Utd v Coventry in League One. It’s come in the last three meetings and both sides have brought up this market in four of their last five games respectively.
Complete the treble with over 2.5 goals at Groningen v Feyenoord. There has been a 2-2, 3-3 and 6-0 in the last three meetings and that heavy defeat must still hurt Feyenoord. They have netted exactly two a game on the road and both sides have seen four of their last five matches go over 2.5 goals.
Considering St Johnstone’s form they are big at 9-1 to beat Celtic and 6-1 draw no bet. For a 1pt Super Single I’m chancing them not to lose at 12-5 with bet365 – so let’s hope they turn up.
I was going to add more bets but with Saints having an off day and Coventry failing to score I’m hoping the Top treble can rescue a poor day and bring me into profit – but I won’t be doing any chasing.
Earlier I did place a first-scorer Yankee using some of my profits but I won’t put it in the top tips. For anyone interested it’s Kane, Dortmund’s Aubameyang, Atletico’s Griezmann and Napoli’s Higuain. The fourfold pays 274-1 – and that’s what I call a long shot!
