THERE is a big day of darts today with a double session.

With some short price favourites on offer with the like Michael Smith, Barney, MVG and Wade with the quad returning just over 11/10. Add Benito van de pas and the five fold returns around 11/5 with Coral.

The Bronze Adonis Steve Beaton takes on young superstar Michael Smith where the former world champion is a BIG 9/2 to upset Smith. Beaton who lifted the world title approaching 20 years. Smith is 2/9 and not a price to be taken.

Although a little on the short side total sets for under 5.5 is 4/6 but can enhance this to 5/6 on Smith winning this by 4-0 or 4-1. Again I like the under 22.5 leg market at 5/6 with Skybet.

Elsewhere I will be expecting a fast paced game between Kyle Anderson and Voort. I immediately took towards the most 180 market and this shines towards the Aussie. So much so this is one of my favourite bets of the day as Vincent can lack in this area with his pace of throw and looking at a bigger bet on this one.

Bunting and Barney could be a classic with layers favouring the Dutch maestro. Buntings problem is finishing on doubles under pressure and could be a repeat of last years marathon game no surprises over 5.5 sets is 4/6 and I'd be tempted for a dabble on this that the game will be closer than the bookies suggest.

Steve Palmer from the Racing Post has gone with clean sweeps in the Wade and MVG games and these are two I may be willing to pass. Newton was awful in his first round to Reyes and hope that Wade does a job on the Fleetwood thrower whose form has declined quicker than I can run the 100 meters!

Recommendations

  • Smith -2.5 set handicap 5/6 Skybet – 1pt
  • K Anderson most 180s vs Voort – 5/6 Skybet – 4pts
  • Barney/Bunting – Over 5.5 sets 4/6 Bet365 (2pts)

    World Championship darts afternoon session

    Singles:

Smith vs Beaton, Beaton over 3.5 180’s 5/6 **NAP**

Smith vs Beaton, highest chekout score over 130.5 5/6

Van den Bergh vs Van de Pas, Van den Bergh win 13/8

    Double:

Smith vs Beaton, Beaton over 3.5 180’s
Van der Voort vs Anderson, over 5.5 sets

    1.96/1

Beaton is nearly always set low 180 lines by bookies but the former world champion is more than capable on them. He should aquire at least four especially if Smith starts slow, which he can have a tendancy to do.

Smith is excellent on high ton chekout combinations using the same bed and a double. So far the 130.5 line was breached twice in three matches yesterday and it should have a good chance of being surpassed in this game.

Van den Bergh caused one of the upsets of round one by eliminating number 9 in the world Ian White 3-1. Admittedly White was not playing well throughout but Van den Bergh displayed consistancy thoughout and was hitting trebles, cover shots and doubles well. I feel he is playing with immense confidence right now and is enjoying the occasion. Van de Pas’ darts stick upwards on the board on contact. He seems to experiance visits to the oche frequently where he struggles to hit a single treble and his scoring subsequently drops so from a consistency viewpoint I think Van der Bergh can edge it at a good price.

Anderson vs Van der Voort could potentially go all the way to a last set. I can see both players winning legs on their throw. I guess it will ultimately come down to who can checkout better with regards to winning the match but I’d expext the match to go over 5 sets.

Wade -1.5 (handicap on 180s) Newton was a disgrace in his last match with an average of 60. Also never hit a 180 either.

    World Championship darts evening session:

    Singles:

Van Barneveld vs Bunting, highest checkout score over 130.5 5/6 **NAP**

Wade vs Newton, Wade over 4.5 180’s 1/1

Van Gerwin vs Webster, Van Gerwin over 7.5 180’s 5/4

    Double:

Van Barneveld vs Bunting, Van Barneveld win
Wade vs Newton, Wade highest checkout

    6/5 **NB**

So far out of six matches in round two, the 130.5 checkout line has been surpassed four times. Bunting and especially Barney regularly take out big finishes and I’d expect one if not both to post a higher checkout than the set line.

Wade at times rather unfairly has a reputation for not being a power scorer but anyone who has seen his recent performances should beg to differ. He has been getting impressive amounts of 140’s and 180’s and is displaying a type of consistency that has seen people label him as a serious candiddate to go all the way this year. In the longer format of round two he should chalk up at lest five 180’s.

I think Van Gerwin is going to put on an exhibition of darting power today after being given an almighty scare by Eidams in round one. In the first round the highest 180 count was jointly held by Winstanley and Evans at nine 180’s apiece and with no disrespect to them, MVG is definitely more capable in that department so in the longer format, where it could be possible that Webster wins a set, eight 180’s for MVG is realistically achievable.

Barney vs Bunting will make for an entertaining match but its one that Barney will edge I think. Bunting has not been setting the world alight this year whilst Barney is the more effective doubler and generally has a knack of being able to do things at the right time. In this world hampionship format, where a whole set can hinge on a single leg or a final dart, Barney posseses the experiance to deliver the goods.

Newton was absoloutly awful in his first round match. There was a difference of ten points between him and Reyes’ three dart averages which happens very rarely in darts. The only reason he progressed was because Reyes missed his doubles and let him in. Against Wade, needless to say he will get outclassed in virtually every department. Wade will very likely take the highest checkout accolade simply because I cannot see him presenting newton with many chances but in addition he is known as one of the best at checking out big scores, which he is also excellent at doing under pressure.
