THIS is the write-up for the Gold Cup which Johnb posted for members on the racing forum on February 1 but it seems to have been missed by many.
I know this horse is one of the popular horses on this site but I just can’t entertain him for this race. In 2014 he fell in the RSA and last year came third in the Ryanair, this season he fell in the King George but basically isn’t a Cheltenham horse. Looking at him last year he didn’t enjoy it.
Willie Mullins may have virtually everything but he has never won a Gold Cup. I have always liked this horse but I don’t think he is a Gold Cup horse, my view is he won’t stay the three miles two & a half furlongs. Mullins should send Vautour to the Ryanair.
Second in this race last year but on his two other visits to Cheltenham he has fallen and I thought last year’s second flattered him as Conneygree went off too hard. It takes a lot to lead all the way but he still managed to win, again this is another horse not for me because he can make mistakes and I can’t trust the distance between him and Conneygree last year.
I think this horse has a better chance than Don Cossack “same owner” and Vautour’s “same trainer” and I think Don Poli will stay all day. He is two out of two at Cheltenham and is definitely one for the first three places.
What a revelation this horse has been since his breathing operation and he is still on for the million pound bonus if he can win the Gold Cup after winning the first two legs. I just don’t fancy him, although he is better after his operation. I just can’t see him staying this distance.
Another horse having a good season and I think he is better out in front making the pace but I don’t think he will be allowed to do that or if connections would want him to do that. Last year he was kept off the pace, got outpaced five out and never got close to them and I can see the same thing happening again.
ROAD TO RICHES
Third last year and ran a decent race but as I said earlier it takes a lot to lead a Gold Cup all the way so again I think the distance between him and Conneygree flattered Road To Riches and again another horse not for me although could sneak a place.
Sixth in this race last year beaten 25 lengths but went on to win the Grand National. If turning up at Cheltenham again I can only see him being outclassed because a Gold Cup takes stamina and speed and last year he simply got outpaced.
NO MORE HEROES
Although favourite for the RSA I would like to see this horse run in the Gold Cup, unbeaten in three starts over fences but still a novice, but I do like him. Third in last year’s Albert Bartlett but after getting hampered he stayed on all the way to the line. I think he has a good chance of at least placing.
Fourth last year and I thought that was a good run considering he didn’t settle too well, he is a horse that runs better February to April time and if settling better this year he has a good chance at big odds.
My early thoughts*
DON POLI 6-1
NO MORE HEROES 33-1 or 12-1 nrnb
