I GOT an email from a punter today asking what's the score with bets placed on Celtic to qualify against Sion in the Europa League.

The Glasgow giants were of course beaten 3-1 on aggregate by the Swiss but have been reinstated after UEFA kicked out Sion for breaching a transfer embargo.

I can tell you that William Hill and Ladbrokes are definitely paying out on Celtic to qualify. People who bet through the internet and on phones should be credited automatically while shop punters will need to fill in details of their bet on a claim form.

Celtic have been awarded both legs 3-0 but bookies will not be paying out in the individual matches, just the “to qualify” market.

The punter placed his bet with Paddy Power and I'm waiting for a reply from them on whether they're paying. If I was a betting man I'd predict they will.

Anyone who had a bet on Celtic to qualify and isn't sure whether they're being paid should get in touch and I'll get an answer.

I had a double with Paddy Power which included the Celtic game. I have contacted them and they have said they will not pay out because they base the result on 90 minutes. This is rubbish, Celtic were cheated and awarded a 3 nil win based on the 90 minutes. They will not budge.

Stuart, no bookies are paying out on the games over 90 minutes. I believe this is because many people backed the draw in the first leg and Sion in the second, especially in accumulators. They’re not willing to pay out twice. To be fair to bookies they don’t have to pay out on Celtic to qualify either so at least punters are getting something back.

surely if sion have broken the rules without knowing this i would not have staked a 90 pound bet on a celtic win and the stake money at least returned?

Peter, I think there’s an argument on both sides but normally when games are played the result stands as far as bookies are concerned. They could change the rules but it would mean delaying pay-outs on every game if they waited to see if there was any protests
