WE'VE waited months for the start of the new season and then bang – Newcastle blow away all our hopes and aspirations in 90 frustrating minutes.

Most – not all – people on the site reckoned the Championship favourites would get off to a perfect start at Fulham but they instead they never really got going.

Rafa Benitez's men had two penalty appeals turned down for handball but Fulham deserved their 1-0 win and I've got no complaints about my Newcastle to score 2+ Super Single biting the dust.

Benitez says the result will act like a “wake-up call' and it should set alarm bells ringing for punters who are trying to pick WDW selections on the English card today.

It's tougher when there's no form to look at so be careful with stakes. Don't wager bundles simply because you've been looking forward to this day.

I'm risking to lose no more than 10pts with mostly singles, doubles and trebles – it will be tough for anyone to land a big one today.

In England's three leagues no one is priced short and in fact only three teams – Bradford, Millwall and Portsmouth – are odds on with every bookmaker. That shows how tough it is.

For that reason my top tips concentrate mainly on Scotland where at least there is a bit of form with the Betfred Cup. I've posted a separate Scottish betting preview.

So look at my tips and do the ones you like on a weekend where we can go slow.

All the usual regulars are back – Desmond has posted goals tips and Scott Allot has put up his European thoughts. Watch out for Jordan and Greg Browning's tips when they drop.

Selectabet is back on the site with 2+ tips but his are for members only and I'll post a members-only Bet of the Day.

As well as the main posters there will be some top tips on the comments section from all the usual informed contributors.

Enjoy the big kick-off and remember to check out WeLoveBetting for their latest tips and video chat.

      Is that Hibs to score five or six goals? Can’t see it even if I think they’ll win.

    • Johnb 8 years ago

      Certainly is mr f, we have a ruthless streak about us this season and I think a few teams are in for a hammering this season whether it starts today or next week,
      we are going at teams this season and Lennon has made it perfectly clear to the players that he want goals and lots of them,
      no sitting back on 1 nils just going for more because we have the players to make a mockery of this league and strength in depth plus another couple of players coming in,
      Our defence is as strong as I have ever seen.

      I can see us scoring early agains Falkirk and I have never been this confident before

    Morning all, it is your main man Max here with a NAP to kick off the new season. I feel most people on here will rush and post up plenty of “Hollywood” lines as the new season as kicked off, I often say Discipline is the key. It is the old saying “only fools rush in” so keep your eyes out for value. Lets hope to kick off the new season with a bang!

    Steering clear of the new leagues for a couple of weeks until we see some form.

    I have one bet for this morning, two for tomorrow morning, and one for Monday morning. The first is in California where the East leaders NYCFC travel to San Jose to face the Earthquakes. There has only been one h2h in the history between these two which was a 3-2 win for NYC last season at home. I think both can score here, NYC are playing a lot better under Patrick Viera this season and have only failed to score once in their last eleven. The Earthquakes are decent at home but have conceded in four of their last five on home soil. This is a very late kick off for NYC who will be kicking off 11:00PM New York time. Whther that has an effect on them I don’t know but with Villa, Lampard, Pirlo and now youngster Jack Harrison, they are capable of a goal. They are also capable of conceding one, most recently with 8 goals going past their keeper in the last 3 on the road. With Chris Wondolowski leading the line you always have a chance of scoring.

    Sunday see’s me stay in the USA where Philadelphia travel to Washington for an East conference tie. Philadelphia picked up USA international Alejandro Bedoya this week who will be an excellent addition in the hole behind Sapong. Philly have only failed to score twice here in 12 games, and with DC not keeping a clean sheet in their last five, the Union will get their chances and I like their goal time.

    Third bet takes us to Mexico where promoted side Necaxa will host Pumas UNAM. Pumas played in a CONCACAF game in Trinidad & Tobago Thursday morning with a fairly strong squad so fatigue might be a case here. Pumas aren’t known for their defensive football despite their three clean sheet this season. They tend to struggle on the road and if you take the earlier games from this year into consideration, they have conceded 14 goals in their last 8 away from home. Necaxa are a bit unknown to me but I do know they have just signed MLS veteran Fabian Espindola who is always capable of a goal.

    Monday sees us head to LA where the Red Bulls take on the Galaxy. The Red Bulls have made some good additions in the transfer market with Israeli Omer Damari being signed on loan, and Daniel Royer, a winger signed from Midtgylland. The Galaxy haven’t conceded many goals at home recently, but they have conceded against the better teams in the league prior to this good run. Red Bulls will certainly get their chances and I like them to score before their goal time. Interestingly they’ve scored in the first half in 10 of their last 13 trips to LA and last 5 games.

    One I’m keeping an eye on for the 16th is Dundalk to score before 71:00. It was 66:00 earlier today and I think that’s value considering these next two games are probably the biggest in their history. I mentioned on yesterdays thread that they were given only £300,000 for winning their domestic league last season, and they have just been gifted £5,000,000 for getting to this stage and will receive a further £10,000,000 if they get through. That is mega money for a side like this who have already knocked out one the best teams in the early rounds in BATE. Could be some value depending where that time goes. Hopefully right out to 79:00 while the public hammer Legia.

    Good luck if you follow any bets and have a good weekend

    English treble : Norwich 6/5, Charlton 5/4, Plymouth 5/4. Scottish treble : Motherwell 13/8, Ayr 6/4, east Fife 11/10. Very best of luck to everyone having a bet today on what is a minefield of a card, especially in England with next to no form to follow.

  15. alva glen 8 years ago

    Not looked at much coupons yet but not sure Rangers are rock bet this wont be an easy game v Hamilton.Fair chance Gers will concede so on the handicap market they have to score 3 goals.

    • Mr Fixit 8 years ago

      Rangers could concede but I’ve got a feeling Accies will go there for a point. Can see 2-0 or 3-1 Rangers.
      Spoke to a bluenose yesterday and he reckons 5-0 or 6-0!

    • sand 8 years ago

      Haha satisfying. They actually believe they are unbelievably good.

  16. alva glen 8 years ago

    Dumbarton look massive at 6/1 at Dunfermline that will be my S/S.

  17. nb89 8 years ago

    Rangers v Hamilton

    In terms of team news today Rangers are missing Wilson through suspension and there is a possibility Hill may be injured as he missed training on Thursday so there are potential problems at the back today however middle to front we are strong and that should get us through today. Unlike John B who is expecting a lot from his team I would be more than happy a 1-0 and 3 points on the board. In terms of bets the handicap bet posted by Mr F is very decent as I think we’ll score a couple and after looking at various bets I think the following have a got chance.

    Over 6 first half corners 6/4 McBookie
    Rangers RT9 6/5

    Also 4 years ago in the first game in the Third Division Barry McKay scored the first goal and I’m backing him again today at 7/1 with Bet365.

    Other bets for today

    Team goals 4 fold

    Millwall over 1.5
    Alloa over 1.5
    East Fife over 1.5
    Brechin over 1.5

    Just over 13/1 888sport

  19. richard 8 years ago

    Mixed bag this morning – from tips last night the Adelaide City game was a total bust but the u20 match I tipped is going right on form 3-1 to Gold Coast u20s by half-time and a few more goals to come hoepfully

    • HullShaker 8 years ago

      Nice one Richard…7 goals in the end ?

  20. wasclueless 8 years ago

    Millwall > 1.5 TGS 8/11
    Lee Gregory ATGS 6/5
    Millwall lost in the play offs to Barnsley and have Gregory and Morrison up front who netted 33 goals last season. Oldham won 3 out of their first 26 games last season before appointing Sheridan who left in the summer. Millwall beat them 2-1 and 3-0 last season.

  21. wasclueless 8 years ago

    Liverpool v Barcelona
    Liverpool play Barca at 5.15 at Wembley. As long as its a decent Barca line up fancy them to net before 36 mins again 5/6

    Starting my rolling NAP again today and last weeks only loser being Newcastle (very last one)

    This time I’ll be starting with £20 but also be putting £50 individually each day as a ‘single’ even though they are doubles or more, this is only my stake so change as you wish, first day of the season so is a bit blind but should do the bizz! So off we go!!

    Usually wait about 6 or 7 games in before i start my serious betting on the new season. Small stakes today hopefully pay for a round or two tonight. Nothing clever RANGERS and MILLWALL both to win in a double

  24. boomshackle 8 years ago

    Morning guys, as the rest of the forum says, we don’t have much to go on at the beginning of the season so i have picked out a few matches where I am happy to risk a point for interest. These match up involve teams who saw plenty of goals last season and have continued that through the pre-season friendlies so seem very reasonable punts:

    Reading v Preston 1/1
    Shrewsbury v MKDons 4/5
    Cambridge v Barnet 5/6
    Portsmouth v Carlisle 5/6

    All bets are Both Teams to Score

    Good luck team Fixit and enjoy the new season :)

    Astra Giurgiu – CSU Craiova
    Astra :
    – Astra Giurgiu managed only a draw against Pandurii 0-0 in the previous round of the championship;
    – At midweek, Astra left the Champions League, being defeated 4-1 on aggregate in the preliminary round by FC Copenhagen;
    – Astra will play against West Ham United for a place in Europa League;
    – Astra has managed 3 wins in 4 games played against Craiova, the last two successes was in the last season, 2-1 in Craiova, and 1-0 at home;
    – The team coached by Marius Sumudica has lost a single game in the last 13 matches played at home, Dinamo were the only team to beat them in Giurgiu;
    =======================================
    Craiova :
    – CSU Craiova won 2-1 against ASA Targu-Mures last round in Ligue 1, this was the first success of the new season after the defeat in the first round against Pandurii;
    – In the last 10 matches played in Ligue 1, CSU Craiova recorded only one draw, against Poli Timisoara, 2-2;
    – In 2016 Craiova managed one away win, 2-0 against FC Voluntari, Instead, at home CSU Craiova has 4 consecutive successes;
    ======================================
    – although Astra has managed to win the last two games of the season in front of the CSU Craiova, this season things are different, and I expect a balanced game between two teams;
    – Astra scored in 21 of the last 22 games at home, Craiova scored in 4 of last 5 trips in Ligue 1;
    – Both matches played by Craiova this season ended with both teams present on the scoreboard, and I think the same will happen this time;
    =====================================
    Bet : Astra – Craiova – BTTS @ 2.00

    Termalica bruk bet (poland) let me down last week by failing to score but they are at home today and will look to get back to scoring which they have done plenty of so far. Their defence is not solid and they dont keep many clean sheets. They play leczna who also like to concede so I think we should see goals.
    Im on btts at 1.90 but over 2.5 goals is over evens which looks solid too.

    Morning gents

    It’s here at last, the new season, although there will be thousands of punters who wish it wasn’t yet after Newcastle losing! My Parnu / Ajaccio double came in last night paying 23/10 so it was a decent start to the weekend

    I’ll be focusing on the Scottish leagues on a Saturday and will be leaving England until September when we have a something to go on!

    Nothing flash for the opening day for me

    Falkirk v Hibs

    It can be argued that JohnB has the green tinted glasses on when talking about his beloved Hibs, however I can’t argue with his thoughts that back Hibs most weeks and you won’t go far wrong! Falkirk are a shadow of last seasons team, they’ve lost a few of their star man and were toothless when we beat them 3-0 two weeks ago! Hibs are as close to a banker in my eyes for the league as you’ll find! Fully expect them to open the season with three points and will be backed by a big travelling support

    Back Hibs 5/6 (Paddy Power) (NAP)

    Rangers to beat Hamilton
    Dundee United to beat QOS
    Clyde to beat Montrose

    Three teams who’ll all be at the top end of their respective leagues come May! Rangers will take care of Hamilton, Dundee United are enjoying life under Rag McKinnin and Barry Ferguson has recruited well at Clyde adding some quality, notably Dylan Easton who was one of Elgin’s best players last season

    Treble pays 2/1 at Bet365

    Good luck to everyone and the season ahead ⚽️??⚽️

    Love the first day of the season and am going for a combination of accumulators based off the stats from last season (perhaps slightly flawed logic…)

    Also bet for next weekend Hull v Leicester and Leicester are above evens… which is my super single of the season!

    btts
    Derby v Brighton 1.83
    Huddersfield v Brentford 1.61
    Rotherham v Wolves 1.83

    Rochdale v Peterborough 1.61
    Swindon v Coventry 1.8
    Southend v Gillingham 1.8

    Three 4 game accumulators with a random selection of these, each averages 8-10 to 1.

    All eyes will be on the domestic UK leagues at 15.00 but there’s plenty going on elewhere and I’ll be taking a trip over to Iceland for a 2nd tier game…

    KEFLAVÍK VS. FJARDABYGGD (15.00 KO)

    Short and sweet – I fancy Keflavik team goals here. They have scored 2 or more team goals in 9 of their 15 games this campaign and have also netted twice in the previous 2 H2Hs which took place within the last year.

    Hakim Ziyech (Twente) to score anytime @ 2.14 with 888

    Twente have sold a lot of players because of financial trouble, but still have their best player and goalscorer Ziyech. I think he will be sold before the transfer window. Many say he is the best player in the league and actually is the only one left at Twente who can score a goal. He had the most shots on goal in the league last season, even more than the first 3 on the topscorers list: Janssen, De Jong and Milik. They are up against Excelsior tonight. I think Excelsior are going down, they sold their best players and haven’t replaced them.

    Opening day of the season, I tend to have 4 or 5x 8 way acca’s, all with the emphasis on the home team. This past 4 years I’ve had 3 land from a £10 delivering between £800 and £1100 typically.

    If at any time of the year, the opening day of the season and the pressure is on the away team to not lose. Pick 2 per division and lower the stakes to a couple of quid.

    There will be the stand out matches such as celtic and rangers at home who should deliver, so you’re looking for the last 6.

    I’ll be on hand as per usual with Derby pre-match summary. There’s not been a lot of transfer movement in or out of Derby, just a a few like Jake Buxton for an undisclosed amount to Wigan and a few other fringe defenders that never really made their mark last year. I think the team is there or thereabouts. Lets just hope the rams don’t lose their 2 best midfielders in this opener for first 2/3 of the season, like last year,.

    Derby team news:

    New boss Nigel Pearson has abandoned the 4-3-3 we’ve had for the past 3 seasons and as Mike Bassett would say ” 4-4- f*&cking 2 ”

    Carson between the sticks

    Christie in right back, Keogh and shackell and Baird at left back. ( Forsyth isn’t injured his wife’s having a rug-muncher )

    Midfield: Blackman on the right, Johnson on the left, and the old guard Bryson and Hendrick in the middle.

    Up front, the two are Ince and Bent.

    The subs: Grant, Russell, Martin, Pearce, Butterfield, Hughes, Lowe

    Just a quick walk through the squad and changes – some a surprise.

    Carson is number 1 keeper, Keogh retains the captain job. Johnson out wide left is a position he held well whilst at Norwich and was used in that position a few times with some credibility. Keogh and Shackell – still not confident in him but he’s 2nd best behind Shackell of a bad bunch. Would love to of seen Forsyth back who we lost for the last half of the season but er in doors is having a baby.

    Bryson and Hendrick, great pair of box to box midfielders and Hendrick being one of the stand out players in the euro’s. Blackman on the right side of midfield is a shift in position, he’s a striker that’s barely had a shout behind the pecking order of usually Chris Martin. I felt sorry for the lad, he was a big money signing from Reading and the lone striker up front that we’ve been playing of past possibly hindered us. Blackman really needs to be up front but seeing him in the side has to be seen as a positive.

    The front pairing is not so much a rigid pair of strikers but Ince will be supplying Bent with the chances so the formation is really a 4-4-1-1.

    Bent never got much of a chance last season and I’m very surprised he wasn’t released. Owing largely to the fact that we’ve had 3 seasons of a lone striker. Up there on his own and if the supply is cut to him, he’ll be lucky to have 5 touches in a match. I’m not convinced, Martin gives more to the game and will get stuck in.

    The subs bench looks solid enough. Weimann is injured, Forsyth at the hospital and in comes an academy product Lowe ( I think he’s a defender ). With Butterfield and Hughes kept back, if we need to sure up a lead with some strength, we’ve Butterfield, if we need to chase the game, we have Hughes as our creative outlet to bring on. Martin – surprised he’s not starting, I think its a mistake – but, it could be that the gaffer wants to know if Bent can perform for us in this new formation. Ince is never gonna lose his slot which means Russell has to miss out by warming the bench. He’s a great asset to add some pace out wide right if we need it.

    Brighton have a man on a ban ( red carded against Borough ) and 2 key players + a few others out injured. Knockheart needs to be kept quiet and I think having a more defence minded Baird in left back should keep him quiet.

    Derby win @ 5/4 with bet365 looks good value. the depth of Derby’s squad, good results (ignoring the poor match away to Benfica ) in preseason and Brightons injury problems and home advantage with a new boss with great experience gives us a huge edge before a ball is kicked.

    Best of luck with your bets guys.

    The Mighty Shakers kick off their campaign at Gigg this afternoon with a visit by a Charlton side under new manager Russel Slade who I remember from his time at Scarborough many moons ago.

    Aspirations aren’t high for us and after losing top striker Leon Clarke we looked to strengthen at the back with Chris Kirkland a bit of a coup signing…not for long mind!

    Kirkland has cancelled his fecking contract and ‘needs time away from the game’…living in Bury can do that to a man ?

    Ben Williams will look to make his debut in goal and may have a tough time of it facing the likes of Lee Novak, Nicky Adjose and a host of new signings for the Addicks.

    I fear for us and hope I’m wrong but can see us conceding a couple today…6/4 for Charlton Over 1.5 team goals is my ‘turncoat’ bet of the day ?

    • Mr Fixit 8 years ago

      Most good strikers miss chances. I reckon you should have taken the Peterborough bid but without Cummings’ goals today you’d have lost – and me.
      Lennon just said Cummings was “outstanding” from start to finish. And reporter at game said it was a cracker.

    Not good enough for Derby today, very lacking in everything, rarely threatened, Brighton pressed well and I felt Derby were a bit lacking in fitness. Possibly its the new formation. Bent rarely got much service, Blackman had a good first 20 mins but overall Brighton dictated much of that game.
    Derby started to look promising in the last 15 when we brought on the old faithful Hughes and Martin, but Bent in the last minute heading straight at the keeper summed up our day.
    Stats were quite equal apart from on corners where Brighton ruled the roost. Of the two teams I’d say Brighton were very good value for the point and Derby have to be disappointed with their performance. Onwards to Tuesday at home to Grimsby, can’t see many changes but Forsyth will probably be back and I think Hughes and/or Martin ought to be swapped out for Baird, Johnson and Bent.

    SUNDAYS TIPS

    HEARTS VS CELTIC 2:15PM

    Everyone who knows me on here knows I’m a Celtic man. I always back big priced goalscorers for various teams including Celtic. The beauty of the bets are that you only need a win every now and again to show a substantial amount of profit in the long term. I’m looking at big defender Mikael Lustig and I can’t believe 888sport are offering odds of 38/1 for first Goalscorer and 15/1 for anytime. Fantastic prices for someone who often threats at set pieces. Of course, there’s always the risk of the likes of Griffiths netting first but when I win, I like to win BIG. I’ll be on both first and anytime. Lustig often scores with a header and the same bookie offer odds of 33/1 for him to score a header anytime. I’ll stick a couple of quid on that too.

    RECOMMENDED BETS
    LUSTIG FIRST GOALSCORER @ 38/1
    LUSTIG ANYTIME GOALSCORER @ 15/1
    LUSTIG TO SCORE A HEADER @ 33/1

    TORONTO VS NEW ENGLAND 00:30AM

    Back defender Justin Morrow to get on the scoresheet. He’s scored 3 goals already this season which ain’t bad for a defender. I backed him in his last game against New England but had no joy. Hopefully he will have more chances with Toronto playing at home. Hills, Coral and Ladbrokes have him priced at 14/1 for first Goalscorer and 9/2 anytime but Paddy Power and 888 are offering 40/1 for first and 15/1 anytime.

    RECOMMENDED BETS
    MORROW FIRST GOALSCORER @ 40/1
    MORROW ANYTIME GOALSCORER @ 15/1

    Back the above 4 first and anytime bets as singles but it’s also worth putting a pound or two on the doubles just incase.

    LUSTIG FIRST @ 38/1
    MORROW FIRST @ 40/1
    £1 doubles returns £1599

    LUSTIG ANYTIME @ 15/1
    MORROW ANYTIME @ 15/1
    £1 doubles returns £256

    GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!

    • Mr Fixit 8 years ago

      Chris, 38-1 is good but if he starts I’ll be on Dembele.
      Needed a goal to give him confidence.

    • chris guy 8 years ago

      I know what you’re saying about Dembele but if picking a striker id rather have Griffiths @ 9/2 as opposed to Dembele @ 5/1. 9/2 for Griffiths is a good price

    • Mr Fixit 8 years ago

      I was on Griffiths in midweek – it’s Dembele’s turn.
      Also Griffiths took a bad knock near the end so might be struggling.
      And remember Dembele’s now been revealed as the penalty taker.
      However, as we know almost anyone can score first.
      When you backing Toure?

    Aberdeen 7/2 and hearts 8/1 both best priced with coral to win league without celtic having some of that

    • Mr Fixit 8 years ago

      Don’t think it will be Hearts – Aberdeen should finish above them.
      Also I wouldn’t write off Rangers or anyone on one game.
      Maybe thought it was going to be too easy today – some of their fans certainly did.

    • nb89 8 years ago

      Some people were a little bit too confident and as I said at the start of the day I would have taken a 1-0 just too get 3 points. There’s still 37 games left and in my opinion we have a far better squad than both Hearts and Aberdeen and whether we challenge Celtic is a different story. If we get the right centre half and forward in we’ll be fine. I would also give Hamilton credit as they played well.

    • Mr Fixit 8 years ago

      Accies got in about them for sure and they were relegation favourites before the game.
      Probably been changed to Killie now.

    • tst1 8 years ago

      Informed choice not based on 1 game but 3 in 10 wins against part time oppositiion at end of last season combined with heats young players winning league by over 20 points against the rangers in previous season is enough for many to bet hearts and aberdeen

    • nb89 8 years ago

      I wouldn’t look too much into the end of the last season as the players switched off after winning the league and beating Celtic in the cup. We’ve added 9 new players and we have plenty of options whereas last season especially at the end we were struggling to fill a bench. I’m confident Rangers will finish at least 2 but I’m happy we are being written off as that’s when we play best.

    • tst1 8 years ago

      Not buying that you dont switch off for 10 games ….nonsense as to additions to squad time will tell but draw against team outrightrelegation favourites does not bode well

    • nb89 8 years ago

      We did switch off in the last 5 league games; I was at every game, also I take it 4 wins in 4 in the league cup including one away to Motherwell doesn’t count. Hearts lost to a Maltese pub team before the start of the season. There’s 37 games left and a lot will happen. One poor performance on the opening day isn’t going to change my opinion of my team.

    Any night owl games tonight gentlemen?

    • chris guy 8 years ago

      Spursman if you want a bet then here’s one for a bit of interest. Kicks off at 12:30 tonight

      I think this looks a good punt craneguy. I was on BTTS already so fingers crossed for us both. I think the Peruvian Guererro is in decent nick at mo for the flamengo dancers.

      Grapes bar before the game for me & bus home after game. Gers need to start taking chances. Team that ended game today probably should have been team that started game. Let’s hope for better next week. Good luck on your night owls
