MARCOS BAGHDATIS fell at the final hurdle of the Atlanta Open to John Isner on Sunday and today he begins his attempt to go one better in Washington.

The Cypriot opens his tournament with a first-ever match against world No.100 Guido Pella and is 4-9 at William Hill against the Argentine who is an 11-5 chance at Paddy Power.

Sam Groth – beaten by Baghdatis in the last 16 in Atlanta – faces a tough opener against Thomaz Bellucci, who is 5-4 at Sportingbet to upset the Aussie (13-19, Unibet).

Aussie veteran Lleyton Hewitt takes on John-Patrick Smith and there's also plenty of women's action from Washington as the build-up to the US Open gathers pace.

There's top-class cycling with the Tour of Poland stage three and opening stage of the Tour of Denmark while on the cricket front the One-Day Cup takes centre stage.

Other sporting highlights include Major League Baseball and the World Swimming Championships so let's hear your tips and thoughts and good luck with your bets.

after losing so cruelly at the hands of Sock last week I’m hoping to make some money back from him today.

    Bevel and d Sock @ 4/1

I don’t know enough about the ins and outs of Brmelmans game to give much tactical insight here, but I do know that Sock was a relative disgrace in his last match against Kudla and if he brings even echoes of that attitude or level here, he’s going to get beaten. Brmelmans upset Matosevic in the first round comfortably, and having a win under his belt in Washington may give him a slight edge over Sock who must still be steaming from Kudlas win over him slightly,

Brmelmans also made 78% first serves and won 94% of those, and those numbers suggest he should be comfortable and confident going into this

    TENNIS NAP:

Vesely WIN vs Almagro @ $2.25

This is all a bit strange, Almagro in shocking form since injury comeback, way down the rankings yet he is short prince fave?? Veswely not in great form but still much better arm than Almagro.

    Chips in Vesely!!!

Thoughts on this? He doesnt have to play murray untill the final and toughest opponent in his quarter is cilic.

  11. Attila 9 years ago

Christ Vesely, up a set & 5-2 in the second, now looks like losing…never seen a bet go from so good to so bad. Hope he pulls it back!

  12. Juan 9 years ago

Spoke way too soon – serving at 5-2 for the match and loses the next 5 games and then the 3rd set unbelievable

  13. DK 9 years ago

Ridiculous, sangakarra caught on 76 by a stunner with roy on 82 at the other end. Treble down, have to rely on the double.

    4fold going well though:
    New zealand – won
    Surrey – now 1/8
    Lajovic – now 1/5
    Muller – playing later

Know the feeling well – I rarely even risk a treble on baseball these days. Tonight I’m on Pittsburgh Pirates ML 6/5, also value in Pirates+1.5 at 4/6 (both Paddy Power). May have a wee punt on over 8 runs in the Dodgers/Phillies game at 10/13. Good Luck.

  17. Ad 9 years ago

Atilla- unlucky! So close. That’s what covers for eh. Tennis can burn you from winning positions like no other though!

  18. Ellis 9 years ago

    Lleyton Hewitt?!

    Who fancies him to win

  19. paddy gooner 9 years ago

Dazid, MLB multiples can be ruined by extra innings, or by relief or closing pitchers who are not on their game. I’m on Pirates ML tonight at 6/5 (paddy power), also a small stakes treble with Pirates +1.5
    Nationals -1.5
    Dodgers/Phillies +8 runs

    Good Luck.

    • paddy gooner 9 years ago

      sorry, that should read:

      Pirates +1.5
      Nationals ML
      Dodgers/Phillies +8 runs

Treble pays 7/2 at Paddy Power.

  20. Juan 9 years ago

Not sure Ellis haven’t seen much of his opponent….i know Hewitt hasn’t been playing much….maybe over 22.5?

paddy gooner was watching the Giants game, into my baseball.

    • paddy gooner 9 years ago

Dazid, I’m a Giants fan as well a Gunners fan, on account of having lived in USA for a couple of decades. And yes Juan it does seem harder to predict – lost both my single and treble last night/this morning. I agree with Dazid about NBA being easier to predict, however its more boring to watch – I’ve been to a few NBA games as well as NCAA (college) basketball. NCAA seems even easier to predict – I usually make some money during March Madness and April leading up to college basketball finals – methinks one can trust the players more as they are always trying to play their best and prove themselves good enough to continue at NBA level.

  21. Ellis 9 years ago

    Juan,,

I’ve gone with Hewitt. Hope the old dog does it

  22. Juan 9 years ago

    Old dog doing ok Ellis..

MLB guys…..is it just me or is this sport the hardest of them all to predict the outcome?

    • DAZID316 9 years ago

Juan, 1st season I have bet on MLB, can be hit and miss, just when you think a pitcher is on a bad run and you pick the other team they have a great game. Fav’s don’t always win match ups, sometimes they price a team up wrong as a underdog and can be easy money. Found the NBA easier to predict than MLB.
