IT was a dramatic opening day in the US Open tennis as Andy Murray shook off an injury scare to beat Robin Haase in four sets.
Murray has been cut to 10-1 third favourite for the title behind Novak Djokovic and my tip Roger Federer.

My main tip yesterday failed spectcularly with Simona Halep struggling in her match before finally pulling through. My tip today is quite short at 8/13 but is as close to a banker as there is. The bet is over 3.5 sets in Bernard Tomic vs Dustin Brown. The bookies arent giving Brown much of a chance in this match, with Tomic 1/3 favourite and Brown at 12/5, but unless one player gets injured, there is just no way this will be a straight sets win. My main bet will be the over 3.5 sets but i will also place a smaller stake on a double of Dustin Brown and Celtic in the Champions League.

I think we will see a sprint today, but not sure the pure sprinters will survive the climb and descent at 26km from the finish.

Lasca sprinted to a 5th place in the first sprint stage 2 and is a sprinter who can climb a hill. Guardini didn’t sprint at all and finished somewhere in the hundreds. It looks like his team go for his team mate Guarnieri in the sprint stages.
Matthews won the stage yesterday and is one of the favourites today. He want’s to defend his leader jersey and I don’t think Gatto will finish in front of him on this kind of terrain.

Id- I think Tursunov is underdog because he hasn’t played since wimbledon and he wasn’t playing very well before that. Gonzalez is a nobody really. Average player. Mostly plays on clay.
I have had a look at this and at 5/2 I am going to put a single on Thrsunov. He was having a good year prior to wimby. He was around the 35 mark. Gonzalez has never been to main draw of the open. I think it is worth a few quid on Tursunov. I think if he isn’t 100% he will retire if he’s losing.
You make a good case. The generous price is what’s putting me off funnily enough. I think someone out there knows something!
I know it doesn’t seem right – normal conditions Thrsunov would be at least 1/2. So represents great value in that sense. Gonzalez took a set off Novak earlier in the year so he’s no mug. But Tursunov plays his best on us hard courts.

Sock retired Wato. An injurys the only way to explain his stuggles. If you’re with bet365 the result will be voided. With some others it will go down as a Sock defeat. Luckily I went with bet365 for the first time in a long time today. Hope anyone else on it had the same luck.
Ad, what is going on with Heather Watson? Surely she was expected to win today?? Maybe Im been a bit critical on her as she’s only 22.
Watson has had a great season, climbing from a low of 161 in the rankings at the start of February to 46 and posting her first two wins over top-20 players.
Considering she beat Cirstea on 3 different meetings its quite poor she got beaten in the manner she did today.

Another easier stage tomorrow before the peloton hits the real mountains on Thursday. Tomorrow it is a flat stage with a small climb at 18 km from the finish which can eliminate some of the fast flat sprinters. After the descent there will be a flat finish.

The Belkin team manager said today after the finish that Hofland had an easy day and will go for the stage win tomorrow. Ciolek sprinted in stage 2 (Hofland finished in front of him), but finished at minutes behind when there was a climb in the final.
Caruso is a sprinter and Kelderman is not. Kelderman sprinted on the uphill finish in stage 3 to try to get some seconds on his GC rivals. He will not sprint on a flat finish like tomorrow because it is far too dangerous. Caruso was 4th today and I think he will be there again tomorrow.
Ad I was too late to get on your Treble but ended up just going with Sock and Gasquet for a few quid and yeah with 365 his match was void so got a few quid from Gasquet winning. Iddy nice one on your Treble too hopefully you guys can come up with another nice double or treble tonorrow. Yesterday was a mixed bag. I promised to keep it simple after swinging and missing on day 1 and I did just that. Gasquet and Nishikori breezed through but Sock retired at 2-1 down, which either voided that selection or busted the treble, depending on your bookie. Funnily enough the reason I used 365 (who void matches that aren’t completed) for this bet was I thought there was a small chance Nishikori or Gasquet might retire. It can burn you both ways, but it’s always worth thinking about which bookie you’re using, especially if you’re placing a big stake.

We saw with Rosol yesterday how difficult some players find it to make the transition from one tournament to another after a great run. Having lifted the title at the weekend Rosol slumped out in straight sets, and Janowicz may well find things even harder. He blew a very comfortable winning position in that final v Rosol on Saturday, wasting many key break point chances and several match points. I’m not convinced Jerzy has the mental strength to put that behind him, refocus and dig deep this week. The only thing putting me off here is the fact that Lajovic hasn’t played any hard court tennis recently, but there’s a good chance Janowicz will give him ample opportunity to find his feet.
