SOMETIMES you just feel the gods are against you. I spent a lot of time thinking about a Super Single yesterday but ended up taking a “safe” double that was beaten by Juventus and Real Madrid.
I actually mentioned four potential singles – and three of them won … Robbie Keane to score for LA Galaxy against New York City, Celta Vigo to win at Levante and St Etienne at Lorient.
In the end I picked the wrong horse so to speak but I don’t think anyone anticipated Juve losing at home for the first time in more than two years and Real being held by new boys Sporting Gijon. I didn’t tip Benfica but their defeat at Arouca was another stunner.
I should have listened to Greg Browning who warned about backing teams playing their first or second games of the season. Wise words indeed.
All my bets were losers bar a 3pts double on Rangers and Man City at 15-8 – and even then I covered the draw at Everton late on.
It’s been an exciting Premier League weekend unless you were at Old Trafford to let’s hope for some exhilarating action from Arsenal v Liverpool on Monday night.
After the start the Gunners have made it’s difficult to know what to expect though. A 2-0 home defeat by a West Ham side then cruelly exposed by Bournemouth was a shocker but Arsene Wenger’s men hit back with a decent 2-1 win at Crystal Palace.
Liverpool have been as dull as Man United with 1-0 wins at Stoke and home to Bournemouth and it would be good to see a more entertaining display at the Emirates. I’ve posted a separate preview of the big game.
Elsewhere on Monday we have Granada v Eibar who only survived in La Liga because of Elche’s financial woes and there is a full Jupiler league card for those who like goals.
It may have been exciting in England but the much-awaited La Liga kick-off was a damp squib with one match going over 2.5 goals and it’s unlikely to improve with tonight’s offering. When Real draw 0-0 at promoted Sporting Gijon and Barcelona and Atletico Madrid manage just one goal each you know it’s down to a bit of ring rust.
All the stats to point to under 2.5 goals at Granada and bookies know it under 2.5 goals paying 40-85 at boylesports. There were four 0-0 draws in La Liga on opening weekend and my friends at We Love Betting I see are suggesting another here. No scorer pays 7-1 at betway and a draw is 23-10 with bet365.
I might go somewhere in the middle and back under 1.5 goals but it’s poor value at 3-5 with BetVictor.
I’m planning to have a good look at the Dutch and Scandinavian games before deciding whether to put up any doubles or trebles later but for now I’ve decided to go with Galatasaray -1 as the Super Single.
I wouldn’t put anyone off the champions at 1-2 to beat promoted Osmanlispor but with Lukas Podolski and Burak Yilmaz set to start they should be too hot for the top-flight new boys.
Gala launched their campaign last week with a 2-2 draw at Sivasspor and that was a decent result after trailing 2-0. Yilmaz and Podolski were both on target after the break and home fans will be keen to see the pair in action together.
I know we’ve been stung by backing against some promoted sides at the weekend but Osmanlispor are tipped to struggle although they started with a 1-1 draw at home Kayserispor. They have a new team that could take time to gel and a visit to Gala is as tough as it gets.
Gala are unbeaten in 13 against their opponents and as I said if you don’t like the -1 just take them to win.
Other sides who should win include HJK Helsinki at home to HIFK and Zenit against a Rubin Kazan who are off form.
Goals bets on the Erste league are always popular and I’ve picked out Maastricht v Telstar. For a goals treble add under 2.5 goals at Granada and both to score at Norrkoping v Helsingborg.
It’s not always a goalfest when they meet but they netted 13 between them in the cup last week and both sides have seen both to score come up in five of their last six league matches.
