IT was a case of close but no expensive cigars on Saturday. Four homes out of five at 8-1 provided a small profit as did two out of three aways.
I was confident about the homes but I was a Southampton goal short and as for the Super Single Peterhead lost 2-1 and QoS's draw tripped up the Top Treble.
Last night I said Villarreal at Levante was favourite to be the Super Single but I've had another look and for me it's draw or Villarreal.
There are three Premier League matches – Hull v Stoke, Spurs v QPR and Sunderland v Man Utd – and it's from one of them I've taken the Super Single.
There have been a lot of comments about Stoke today and I don't think they'll lose but a draw is more likely. So I was surprised to see Stoek draw no bet at over evens and that's my pick.
Hull will bring back the players they left out against Lokeren in the Europa League in midweek but they haven't scored in three games against Stoke and could struggle again.
Spurs start the Top Treble but I'm leaving Man United out until they show some form – although with Robin van Persie back I'd expected them to edge a win.
Emmanuel Adebayor, Christian Eriksen, Younes Kaboul, Aaron Lennon and Etienne Capoue will return for Spurs after being rested for Thursday's Europa League clash at AEL Limassol.
QPR started with a defeat at Hull and I don't think Harry Redknapp's men are good enough to go to White Hart Lane and get a result.
Barcelona kick off their La Liga bid against Elche and of course are a tiny price so look at them minus or minus two. They started last season with a 7-0 win – their biggest of the campaign – and beat Elche 4-0 at home. I'm playing safe by taking them on the treble -1 at 3-10 but for a single I'd consider Barca -2 at 4-5 with Betfred.
Other sides who have caught my eye include St Etienne at home to Rennes and Moenchengladbach at home to Stuttgart and I'm going to confuse the issue by putting them both on the treble. I know that makes four but if you perm three from four you're mainly doing trebles and one wrong gives you the stake back.
St Etienne lost in the Europa League in midweek but have started the league well with two wins. Rennes lost at Lyon them hammered Rennes but haven't netted in four visits to St Etienne.
Moenchengladbach won in the Europa League last week and I expect a fast start against a Stuttgart side beaten in the German Cup by Bochum last week. Borussia have a poor home record against their opponents but look better prepared for this one.
In Holland there is a big game between Ajax and PSV and best bet here looks like both to score or over 2.5 goals. Ajax have started the season with wins over Vitesse and AZ – conceding in both – but it's PSV who are top after a 6-1 thrashing of NAC.
There have been over 2.5 goals scored in PSV's last five away games and in seven of Ajax's last eight home games. Dutch World Cup star Memphis Depay has netted four times in the opening two games and is worth a look on the anytime scorer market.

By now everyone knows New York are becoming a really good team more so attacking, a lot of the time they know they can out score teams with the likes of Henry, BWP and Cahill, although most of the time they are sloppy when defending which gives the opposition a chance of breaking and scoring which has happened often this season.
BWP is short for this game at 5/6 but I will put him in a double/treble possibly. My pick for this game however is NYRB WIN AND OVER 2.5 goals. this has come up in the last 3 H2H also with red bulls being the home side.

My pick for this game is straight forward again Toronto have great attacking power but not very strong defensively, Chicago have a few good attacking players and I feel they will find the back of the net at least once as Toronto have been leaking a lt of goals lately BTTS has come up on there last 5 home games and also the last 4 times these two teams have met with Toronto being the home side. BTTS 8/11 is my pick!!!

Real Madrid face Cordoba on Monday and I really expect Real Madrid to cause some damage at home. Bookies go as short as 1/20 for Real to win in 90 mins. One bet which stands out for me is Sergio Ramos to score anytime. Towards the end of last season he was playing very well and scored 3 goals in his last 5 league games. As well as this he also scored a double against Bayern Munich so 5 goals in 6 games. Best price for Ramos First Goalscorer is 16/1 whilst several bookies including William Hill go as short as 8/1. I agree 8/1 is just ridiculous but it just goes to show you what the bookies think of his chances. I’m not backing him for first goal, I’m more interested in backing him to score anytime at 11/2 with Skybet. William Hill offer the same bet at 13/10 and Paddy Power not much better at 17/10. The 11/2 in my opinion is an absolute steal and I’ve lumped on at that price. I’ve also stuck a small stake on Ramos to score 2 or more at 40/1. Again William Hill offer odds of just 7/1 and Paddy Power 8/1. I’m posting this just now as I believe his odds will change before Monday. I cannot wait until the odds for the Fulham game are posted against Brentford the bookies tend to go form mad in the Championship. As I learned last season no team can carry form forever especially when they have a certain level of player. My mate has a season ticket at Fulham and reckons Felix will go if they lose again, the fans are ready to go for him allegedly, but I think the bookies will way over-price Fulham and they’ll win in the derby.

Chris, I watch Barca a lot more than Madrid, but early season with the squads they both have they don’t have fixture congestion and have ridiculous depth. Both will want to send out a message first game and win easily. Haven;t seen odds, but wouldn’t surprise me if a -2 double came in. Though I wouldn’t advise till I saw odds.

End of the day the worst team Real will play is probably: Casillas, Coentrao, Varane, Ramos, Arbeloa, Illarremendi, Alonso, James, Isco, Bale, Benzema.
Capable of scoring 2 against any team…3 of 4 of those will probably have better starters against a newly promoted side. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a -3 victory. Again leave that to Chris and Mon etc… I have my ideas but I’ll post Barca team and tips at 7.15

I don’t like big odds and I know two of them have had bad starts but:

I’m simply put off by how good the odds are.
Jack, I’ve read a few previews of Eibar-Sociedad and all are predicting this will be a tough game for Sociedad. Eibar were defensively sound last season while Sociedad look a bit weaker than they were. It’s a big game for the newly-promoted side at home and the feeling is they’ll draw or lose by one.

Jack, Eibar I believe conceded just 12 goals at home last in 21 games last season and play in a tiny 5000 capacity ground. Sociedad played on Thursday in Europe and having sold Griezmann could be without Vela too.

Selling Khedira is fine in La Liga, but immensely fluid teams that work hard seem to be the way forward: see the Atletico team of 2013/2014 and Dortmund of 2010-2013 with lesser players. A midfield of Kroos/Modric won’t survive the passing of Barca/Bayern.
Casillas is first choice again after being dropped for 2 years? His control of the dressing room and club is unholy…and that’s coming from a Chelsea fan.
Jack, I get just get the feeling that all has not been well within the Real camp for a while now, maybe Im wrong. The only reason Casillas is no.1 again is because Diego Lopez has moved to Milan.
I just get the impression that transfers at that club are mainly decided by the president.

Di Maria is world class, we all know that, but he seemed to have his best season last year playing at number 10 for Madrid. I guess this could be due to age and learning but who knows. If Ozil is worth 42.5 million, I’d happily pay 50 million for Di Maria in United’s position.
I would sign him no matter what but regardless it confirms to me Mata was a pointless signing for United T 37 million because he can only play number 10. Which is the favoured position of Kagawa and Januzaj and perhaps Rooney. To explain further so I’m not accused of just saying it.
I have said for the past year that very fluid teams and sides who work hard are the way forward and number 10’s who don’t track will be in for more stick. In the past few days as its fresh in the mind. Ki’s goal vs United, Mata was supposed to track him. Coleman’s goal vs Arsenal, Ozil was supposed to track him. Watch them back, not entirely either players fault but they play a reasonable part.
Teams like Atletico and Dortmund and even our team of 2012 have thrived on hard work. Counter-attacking can beat tiki-taka. 3 of the 4 teams in last seasons champions league semi-finals play best on the counter.
LvG is turning United around, but players like Mata will become less important over the next 2 or 3 years.
Jack, I don’t care how good Di Maria is, one player is not enough to bring in at a club as big as Man Utd. I think Rojo has the potential to flop but only time will tell. Also your correct in saying the signing of Mata was not needed as we now have a situation of 3 no.10 on the bench and a waste money that should not have been spent.

@darren, as a Hull fan I can assure you 100% we won’t rest any of our players today for the European tie. League survival is our bread and butter to surviving financially. The fact we played our second string on Thursday suggests this. As for the game itself today I reckon it’ll be a low-scoring affair which will end in a draw. Stoke lost their first game of the season so will want to make amends and if you ask any Hull supporter if we’d take 4/6 points in the opening two games we’d of gladly taken it.
I agree with Real Madrid playing their first league game at home there’s no way they are going to rest any players. Losing to Atletico the other day may give them even more reason to put on a performance.

alva, that’s fair enough but Celtic will be proved correct to rest players with if they win their big Champions League game on Tuesday and all their fans expected it. Hearts rested players for the Challenge Cup and that shows their priority is with the league. No one cared less about the Challenge Cup until Rangers started playing in it.
Okay now I’m totally lost on the bookies. But why arem El Haddadi and Sandro Ramirez like 4/1 to score first… nobody thinks they’ll start. Just to give you guys a heads up on bet365, had an in-play £10 asian -1 @ 1.9 odds, watched the cashout climb as i watched the game, at 81 minutes I tried cashing out @ around £17.50, the cashout amount kept climbing every 30 seconds or so, offered me the cashout option which failed, and failed, and failed, and failed ………….
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz and cue a phone call to their cutomer service, i got through @ 83 minutes and was put on hold, repeatedly trying to cashout whilst they investigated, @ 88 minutes ( 2 minutes before they came back online ) the price was £18.52, finally it let me cashout @ £18.52, however it gave me £8.52. Just for giggles, I dropped £8.52 on to Hume City vs Heidelberg utd ( aussie prem ) 6 minutes in for a ” no first goal ” odds were 19/2, I thought, so long as they don’t score for 5 or 6 minutes, my cashout would be higher than stake……. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. It took till the 28th minute for my cashout to reach £8.52. I rode it, watched the stats ( they’d shared 3 shots off target and had just clicked up the 2nd corner of the game ). Tottenham rested players on Thursday so they will come back in today fresh and eager to impress. This is pochatino first league home game and I’m sure he will want to make it two out of two wins. Against a poor qpr team who have a lot of average championship players in there team, I think spurs will be far to strong for them and the game will be over in the first half!

After a few final and high scoring pre-season games, Barcelona should make a strong start against a team they beat 4-0 at home last year. Flagged elsewhere that Elche scored just 30 in 38 league games, the lowest in La Liga and while Barcelona win to nil is the obvious call it’s too short at just 8/13.

Some different thoughts on this game on the site. I am starting with both teams to score. We know united are not the best at the back at the moment and Sunderland will be up for the challenge. 3 of the last 4 meeting saw this bet land with the one that didn’t was a 1-0 win for Sunderland. Both teams to score is 5/6 Skybet
In the goal scorer market, I mentioned last season the value is with a home team player when they are playing “the big boys” and the one I want to be on here is Connor Wickham. He started to show signs of his potential towards the end of last season and at 3/1 Paddy Power looks a good price to me.
I cant be backing United at odds on not until they show signs of getting to grips with LVG formation, so It is Sunderland on the double chance me at odds against which could prove the way to go. It is 5/4 Various.
I will be taking a bit of a chance of Sunderland to score O1.5g. I am not convinced by the united defence and Sunderland is never an easy place to go, it is best price 10/3 Coral and I will have a small bet on this, but the other 3 selections are my main ones on the game.

The first of Spain big three get the campaign underway tonight and it should be a comfortable home win. It may not be a cricket score as several of Barcelona new signing wont be playing due to injuries and suspension and Pique and Neymar wont feature.
Again it will be all eyes on Messi and backing him anytime is no value, as I say I think it will be comfortable for Barcelona so I will take Messi to open his account by nabbing a brace tonight. Elche lost 4-0 last season and I think a similar score line is likely and it would be highly unlikely if Messi isn’t amongst the goals. Some firms have him odds on for a brace so anything evens or better should be taken, and the 5/4 on offer at Betvictor could be generous and profitable later tonight.

Craig, I always believe that it is wrong to assume a decent player in one team will become a decent player in another, it always takes time to fit in with different managers and teams game plans. Di Maria is an outstanding player but you are spot on as it will take time for him to really become part off and influence the side. Might be wrong but I personally think Mata does not look as good in the Utd team as he did in the Chelsea side.

That is 2 poor games and 2 losing bets for me in the first week of Spain’s Primera Division.
I avoided the opening games of the English Premier and the lastest round of the Europa League qualifiers as they are always too unpredictable.

Just looking at a lot of scores from Argentina today in various divisions – out of the 22 completed matches, 14 have gone under 2.5 goals whereas 8 have gone over 2.5 goals.
Is this a relatively regular occurrence for this league?
I’ve noticed the French league is pretty barren with regards to goals too (as shown by this weekend where 19 games across Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 went under 2.5 goals and 3 goals went over).
Is this the case across many weekends or does this one seem to be a fluke weekend, such as the lack of goals in the English League One on Saturday?
Could be well worth doubles on unders in the future if it’s a commonly recurring thing?

cooldude- Adi is a good player but I’ve been slightly frustrated at his performances of late. He made a blistering start at Portland, scoring 4 goals in 4 games but then hasn’t scored since the start of June, stretching back 9 MLS & 2 cup games. I agree though at this present time he has real potential and will hopefully go on from here. :)

Thats incorrect MonLosBlancos. Only the first in play bet is risk free. You get that stake refunded if it loses. Ive used the offer every time and always found a way of guaranteeing profit. Mu normal method won’t work on this match at present due to the odds available.
