IT was all about Rangers for me on Wednesday night and while they beat Ayr the win wasn’t as emphatic as I expected.
I risked 4pts on them scoring more goals than Celtic and that one finished 3-2 in the favour of the side playing in the Champions League. That price started at 4-5 and was cut twice so I wasn’t alone in thinking it looked a great bet.
Even William Hill admitted to me it was the wrong price but they got out of jail with Celtic scoring three although that’s now a 50-50 tie with Malmo after they conceded a last-gasp second to the Swedes. My second Super Single was Rangers -2AH so that was 3pts returned.
It was a night of close calls with Basel conceding in 96 minutes to beat the Top Treble after wins for Hull and Leeds on the double chance.
Thursday is all about the Europa League and I’ve posted a separate preview with some team news. Pick of the matches include Southampton v Midtjylland and I can’t see anything but a convincing Saints win as long as they field a strong side.
That’s the key for Europa League matches as so many sides – look at West Ham – simply don’t want to be involved.
Saints are no bigger than 4-11 at Betfred to win so go with minus one at 20-21 at Betfred and that’s the Super Single.
My treble is Ajax at home to Jablonec as they try to make amends for their Champions League exit and current tournament favourites Borussia Dortmund at Odd even if the Norwegians have impressed in recent weeks.
Complete the treble with St Etienne at Moldovans Milsami who lost 2-0 home and away to Albanians Skenderbeu in Champions League qualifying. Reports suggest the French will be at full strength and if so should win.
Other sides I considered included Athletic Bilbao at Zilina but much depends on how much the Super Cup clash with Barcelona took out of them and of course the face the champions again in this weekend’s La Liga opener.
I also like Lech Poznan at home to Videoton and Standard Liege at Molde but there’s no point in putting up too many bets.
I’m playing in a charity golf event with Ace – and that’s his real name – today so I won’t be around much but if I get a chance I’ll put up a goals double or treble before I go.
