BASEL proved all the research in the world, all the form you could want and a head-to-head record to die for can meaning nothing when it comes to the reality of 90 minutes play.
The Swiss leaders stumbled to a shock 2-0 defeat St Gallen as their 100 per cent record crumbled like an ice-cold Toblerone.
Kalmar had earlier done the business so Basel beat the treble and again well done to everyone who put up winners including Odd. I mentioned them but with it being a cup clash it took some good info to be posted before they looked a great bet at home to Brann.
Playing with level stakes means Basel did me little damage and I'm hoping to recoup the small loss tonight.
I've posted a separate preview on the Scottish Championship clash between Falkirk and Rangers and like Falkirk double chance at 11-10 with Ladbrokes and that's a possible Super Single along with Lille at Caen in French Ligue 1.
Other sides I've identified as good things include take Irish league leaders Dundalk at home to Limerick, Feyenoord at home to Heerenveen and Roda at Telstar.
Feyenoord of course lost big defenders De Vrij, Janmaat and Martins Indi after the World Cup as well as Pelle but have signed Heerenveen's Bilal Basackoglu for £3m and their opponents lost another attacker in Alfie Finnbogason to Real Sociedad.
They were tipped by many to lose last week's opener with Den Haag but beat a side who were reduced early to 10 men 1-0 while Heerenveen lost at home to promoted Dordrecht.
So the Rotterdam giants, who have lost one of their last 11 to Heerenveen, look a decent shout although a best 8-15 at William Hill may be a tad short and that seems to be the verdict.
Other sides I've looked at are Nancy at home to a Arles side we know struggle on their travels, Sparta Prague at home to Banik Ostrava, Slovan Bratislava at home to Zenica and St Pat's at home to UCD but they are of course extremely short.
After reading some of the comments and doing more checks I've decided to take Bruges at home to Cercle Bruges, Dinamo Zagreb at home to RNK Split and Dundalk at home to Limerick for what looks like a safeish top treble. Zagreb, according to some great stats put by Greg Browning, are unbeaten in 65 matches at home.
And for the Super Single I'm taking a chance on Jackson Martinez to score first for Porto at home to Maritimo. Porto are being well tipped but are too short for the straight win so let's hope Martinez can start where he left off last season after his club resisted the chance to cash in on his value.

So far in the league thee isn’t much to go on as Auxerre have played once at hoem and won 2-0 and Orleans have played once away and won 1-0.
They did play a friendly match last month which Auxerre won 1-0. Given it was a friendly I’m not putting to much stock in that result but given Orleans last 10 away games have only seen them win 3 times I’m happy to side with Auxerre at a best priced 2.34 at pinnacle sports.

I see this match is being mentioned by several punters including MrF. Here are some pointers.
So we all know about the players that left Feyenoord already, but apart from this Porto is trying hard to sign Clasie and Kongolo was even mentioned in one sentence with ManU. I can’t imagine this not having an impact on the players involved.
Mr.Orange already mentioned Feyenoord really lacks a decent striker: couldn’t agree more, Te Vrede/Manu are no Feyenoord material. Same goes for their defense, guys like van Beek are not (yet) going fill the gaps the transferred guys left.
Last week’s match vs ADO turned into a very lucky win, basically Den Haag was on top and got screwed by the referee who red carded (two yellows) ADO player Schet. If it were an English ref, the guy would have finished the match without a card……
Heerenveen has its own problems. They have a new coach and as mentioned by others they lost Basacikoglu and Finnbogason amongst others. Although Heerenveen, losing at home to newcomer Dordrecht, looks like the perfect opponent for Feyenoord to tank some confidence in front of a packed Kuip Stadium, I think it’s a very dangerous game to play Feyenoord to win, especially at the current prices.
I will avoid this match for 1X3, and the goals market doesn’t look to be priced very attractive either (+2.5@1.47), the best value could be dc Heerenveen/Draw @2.75, or even Heerenveen dnb @4.33.
I couldn’t describe it better. You can’t compare this Feyenoord with last season. They will definitely bring in some additions and it will take time to rebuild the team. Heerenveen … even worse. Both teams with shaky defences, and without a real goalscorer, although M. Uth (Heerenveen) played decent last season. There is value on Heerenveen, but for me definitely a skip.

Standout bet for me is RKC Waalwijk to win at home to Oss (7/10). Oss had a poor away record last year and have started this season with a 4-0 loss at home. RKC were edged out 3-2 in their first game but should be stronger at home.
I also like the look of Jong PSV to win at 19/10. Opened up their campaign with a win while their opponents were hammered 5-0. Taking teams away from home in the dutch second tier is always risky, and a lot will depend on how strong a team they put out. One for small stakes.
Duffman, a word of caution on the Jong PSV team. They can select loads of players and maybe field a complete other team than last week. Should wait for the line-up.
The Jong teams are always hard to predict as far as team line-ups go. I’d wait for the teams but I’ll be sleeping so it’s a bit of interest for small stakes since they’ve been performing well lately. Thanks for the advice though.

They have lost just 5 of their last 155
They’ve won 25 of their last 26 home games
Hence why that can be backed tonight at 3/10, haha!
They’ve had a terrific start to the season and are worth a look over 2.5 team goals

Good luck with it harpreet but I won’t be on it mate. Last league game was 1-0 and the last 12 games each side have played has seen 8 games where one or both sides did not score. You can get 11/10 with Corals as it has drifted slightly. Not saying it wont land but I don’t touch games with these stats mate.

100% of Dinamo Zagreb’s home games have went over 3.5 goals this season and 75% of games overall have too. RNK Split have seen none of their games go over 3.5 goals but I’m still happy to go with it considering the price.
Both teams have scored in 100% of RNK Split’s away games but 0% in Dinamo Zagreb’s home games and seeing as Dinamo Zagreb are the clear favourites for this match, I’m staying well clear of that.

If you want a safer option then choose over 2.5 goals as Dinamo Zagreb have seen 100% of their games go over 2.5 and RNK Split have seen 50% of their games go over but that is priced at 3/4 so there’s not much profit there – it’s entirely up to you!

Working out at 1.950 on bet365. I love these two teams, won loads of times on them last year, plus they are both playing at home today.
Dinamo so far this season read, played 4 won 4, 15 goals for 4 against.
Sparta have played 3 won 3, 6 goals for and 1 against.
I feel that both these teams should win their games today, if only by 1 goal at least that will mean a refund at worst. This is the reason I prefer to place Asian Handicaps as opposed to ordinary handicaps.

Nimes have seen nine goals in their two games this season, and saw over 100 go in last season, suggesting that goals could be likely. Dijon finished sixth last year, so are a decent team. Last 5 meetings have seen BTTS, so I’ll be on that.

Not that brave to be honest mate, I think there are better bets out there today backed up by better stats. They drew 1-1 in the cup a few days ago and that seems the only realistic basis for the tip as neither team have many btts matches and their only other h2head matches have been friendlies.
Orleans are newly promoted and whether they can score away at auxerre is too unpredictable for my liking. Can lightening strike twice in a few days? Possibly but in your shoes I’d at least want to know the strength of the line ups in comparison to the cup game before placing any money.

I watched the second half on bets365 waiting on Basel just to score. One shot on target the whole 90 minutes. Both paid around 15/1 each fivefold.
Whoever gets Basel in the champions league has got it easy as this is a very poor team on last nights evidence.

Porto is the best team in portugal again, they sold mangala, fernando and a few more but got really good players. their defence will be maybe shaky as its a new core of playersand a new defensive midfield and even midfielders. after what happened last season with such disastrous play and resultsthey will go in to attack and i can see them score 3 goals. porto to score 3+ goals is evens, btts and pver 2.5 is 2/1 and porto and ov is 5/6. hope this helps anyone having a bet in this game.. pretty confident about my team…

*NANCY to win @ 1.75: Nancy are of to a good start (W1 D1), whereas Arles has been struggling recently (L1 D1) and no goals scored.
*NIMES – DIJON over 2.5 @ 2.20: Stats say it all. Nimes’ goals difference over their last three games reads 6F 5A, Dijon’s 4F 3A. H2H shows that every H2H since february 2011 saw both teams scoring at least once, 3 out of 5 went over 2.5. BTTS @ 1.92 seems good as well.
Word of caution:
Watch out with LILLE, as it’s not sure whatsoever that they will win in Normandy. Caen has had an excellent start and is a difficult team to beat at home. Last year they beat all big teams in the league. Lille’s start was not good and they are involved in the all important Champions League qualifiers.
Same thing with STANDARD. They’re nicely priced for a reason. Not only does coach Luzon change his team when playing teams like Mouscron when the CL qualifiers are approaching (he did the same thing against Kortrijk, a game they were more than lucky to win), but he also has to deal with a couple of keyplayers being injured (among other topscorer Mujangi Bia and Carcela).

Some info I have found for tonight’s game……
Telstar vs Roda JC (Dutch Jupiler League, 7:00PM)
We backed against Telstar last week as they went down 3-0 to a star studded Ajax reserves. Yes, they faced a decent side on that day, but the situation hasn’t changed for Telstar and having faced a reserve side containing Eredivisie players, they now face a former Eredivisie team in Roda JC. Telstar have a very weak squad this year and are one of the favourites to go down to the pits of Dutch football come the end of the season. Daryl Van Mieghem and Kevin Brands both scored 8 goals a piece last season and both have now left the club. Calvin Macintosh who scored 4 goals from defence in 36 appearances last season has also left, as has midfielder Sjakk Lettinga who made 39 appearances for the club last season scoring 2 goals. Many of the Telstar players made their debut last week against Ajax reserves and are very inexperienced. Roda JC have also been plagued by the loss of some decent players in the summer, I won’t bullshit you in that regard. Top scorer Guus Hupperts has left for AZ Alkmaar and they have lost a few other players in Kali, Donald and Luijckx but with the departure of Hupperts came a transfer fund of £880,000 and they have used that wisely to fill voids. It’s inevitable I suppose that a relegated Eredivisie side will lose some of their players but with the likes of Van Berkel who arrives from Sparta Rotterdam, Van Hyfte and Rutjes from MVV and most notably Lagouireh from Eindhoven who scored on his debut last week, they have also strengthened and should be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. Roda JC proved their worth last week in a 3-2 win over fellow newly relegated side RKC Waalwijk. They started that game incredibly well going 2-0 up in 20 minutes before letting the lead slip but showed their resolve with a 92nd minute goal from the aforementioned Lagouireh to seal the win. I’m expecting Roda JC to comfortably win this one but given their new lineup, they could well concede, especially being away from home. Look for goals here due to inexperience in both sides, but also include Roda to win in your bets today as they should have too much class for a weakened Telstar.

Few people contacting me as Hearts price is drifting, 5/4 in places, and money coming for Hibs. Reason for this is after we lost our keeper to injury against Rangers our reserve keeper Scott Gallacher was going to start on Sunday. He has been injured in training and Hearts have tried to keep a lid on it but we have a third choice keeper, Jack Hamilton, who will play on Sunday. He is an excellent young keeper and it will not make any difference to our chances. Get on Hearts at 5/4 ;)

Manchester United will be much more of a force this season under van Gaal and were unbeaten against some tough opponents in, all be it, pre-season. He’ll be looking to blow Swansea away in his first competitive game at Old Trafford.
Crystal Palace are having a bit of a mad time with a player revolt over bonuses and Tony Pulis leaving just 2 days before the start of the season. For me if Arsenal can sign a proper holding midfielder they will take Chelsea and City all the way.
Chelsea, well the longest odds. Perhaps because the game is still 3 days away, and we’re not at home. For me, Chelsea will be strong enough to beat Burnley even if they sit back, now that we have a proper striker and somebody who can control the tempo.
I think we’ll win by 2 but if you think this is just my bias, or want your money on Saturday night take the top 2 @ 2.4/1
Anyone got any information on Watford? I thought Norwich were very poor last week and it sounded like Watford really mean business this season.
I was surprised to see Watford as big as 12/5 for the win and 7/5 for DNB. Granted Carrow Road isn’t an easy place but the pressure’s really on Norwich to perform.
I’m very uneasy about taking handicaps this early on in the season. I’m sure the big boys view will be win at all costs. 1-0, 2-1 etc. They may take a few weeks to get in their stride.

Last seasons champions Sparta face last seasons 10th placed Banik Ostrava on week 4 of the Czech Gambrinius Liga. Sparta have had a good start to the league with 3 wins out of the first 3 opening games. They were unlucky to have been knocked out of the Champions League on away goals to Malmo, something which would have disappointed the fans, but today they move on and its time to give the fans something to cheer for. Banik Ostrava have yet to pick up a win in the first 3 games of the season and come into this game off the back of a cup game which they won 3 days ago. Sparta Prague have had 6 days to rest for this one after receiving a bye into the next round of the cup. Sparta have won the last 7 out of 8 games against Banik Ostrava, albeit the last fixture between the two in March finished a draw but this was on Banik’s soil. In 21 home fixtures Sparta have come out on tops 15 times and lost only twice the last dating back to 2008. Banik have also failed to score in 6 out of the last 8 fixtures between the pair, so this shows the dominance Sparta have over todays visitors. With the fresher legs of Sparta and them wanting a solid win in front of their home fans after being knocked out of the Champions League I feel Banik are really going to struggle today.

Nassr have strengthened their team over the summer with Brazilian striker Marquinhos and Polish Midfielder Mierzejewski joining the ranks. Manchester United will be looking to start a brand new book, let alone a chapter, when they open the 2014/15 season at home to Swansea. Van Gaal has been nothing short of miracle worker if pre season form is to be taken into account. Undefeated in all 6 friendlies. Yes, they’re friendlies, but when you look at the teams played, you would not have thought United would be picking up results like that with their new manager straight from the off, but they have, and they’ll be looking to take that unbeaten run into their new campaign. ‘Louis van Gaal makes his managerial bow in the Premier league as United open their campaign against Swansea. The Dutchman has implemented a 3-4-1-2 shape in pre-season and looks set to roll out the formation in the league for the first time, though has injury concerns in defence, with Luke Shaw out for four weeks and Jonny Evans and Antonio Valencia doubtful – all three missed the final pre-season game against Valencia earlier in the week. Should the latter two not be passed fit, Van Gaal is expected to turn to youngsters Reece James and Tyler Blackett to fill the left wing-back and left centre-back positions respectively. Meanwhile, Ashley Young will be rewarded for his strong pre-season form with a start as the right wing back against Swansea. New signing Ander Herrera will make his debut alongside Darren Fletcher in central midfield, with Juan Mata also expected to feature behind the strikers in a central role. Swansea have had a mixed pre season, a couple wins, couple losses and a draw. Not world class opposition but teams you’d expect them to be beating, friendlies or not.
Lost a couple of important figures, including they’re No.1 Michel Vorm, they’re first choice full back Ben Davies to Spurs, and now one of their first choice centrebacks in Chico Flores. Some info I read up about yesterday evening; ‘Swansea boss Garry Monk is without Leon Britton and Marvin Emnes for the trip to Old Trafford, with the pair both suffering from knee injuries. Nathan Dyer missed Swansea’s final pre-season game for personal reasons whilst Wayne Routledge suffered a slight knock, but the duo are both in contention for the wide roles against United, with summer signing Jefferson Montero another option. The Swans boss has been experimenting with a 4-4-2 during pre-season to accommodate summer signing Bafetimbi Gomis alongside Wilfried Bony – a formation that has forced another new signing, Gylfi Sigurdsson, out wide. The Icelandic midfielder could return to the role behind a lone striker away to United, with Gomis perhaps debuting from the bench. 4/6 of Manchester Uniteds pre seasons games saw btts and over 2.5, with United winning all 4, where as only 2/7 of Swansea’s games have.
H2H shows Swansea have only scored once in the league at Old Trafford, but they did have an impression away win in the FA Cup on the 5th of January, winning 2-1.
United have scored 2 goals in every home tie against Swansea in the BPL, and that trend should follow in a Swansea side with a few experienced gaps in their back line.

I will be interested to see how Swansea perform this season. I think as a team they’ve gone as high a they can go in the Premier league so will either be around that same level or on the decline. Bony is possibly their best attacking player right now but was nothing more than average at the World Cup. He did score but I’d imagine his shots to goals ratio was horrific.
Lets not forget either that they have nothing more than a rookie manager who’s own reputation (at the present) is built on what he achieved as a player at Swansea in his career and nothing more. A few dodgy results and the questions will soon be asked.

I think Jones, Smalling and Rafael are the problems for Man Utd in defence. It’s these players that make Evans look bad. I can remember many a time Evans playing perfectly well with either Vidic or Ferdinand playing alongside him. Its shocking how some of these players actually got to international level to be fair. Get another centre half and a RB, job done.
Also possibly a winger out on that right. Like a Young or Valencia… but better.

cooldude- maybe I was slightly harsh on Jones. Looking at all other ‘big teams’ and their right back position’s and we have- Ivanovic (Chelsea,) Zabaletta (Man City,) Chambers (Arsenal) and Johnson (Liverpool) Zabaletta is the best in this position on current form in the world for me, Ivanovic is a great Prem defender also. Chambers has got youth on his side and will get better and believe it or not many people have commented on Johnson’s improved defending for Liverpool.
So you could say your on par maybe with Liverpool or Arsenal in this area but Chelsea and Man City are miles ahead in terms of quality from the rest.
Liverpool now have manquillio and Flanagan is a natural right back

Flanaghan is a good defender Danny but will never make it big at Liverpool in my opinion. He will end up going down the same route as Kelly and will end up at the same level as Spearing and Hobbs to name but a few.
Shaun I disagree I think flanno is a much better defender than most people give him credit for and will get better with age. Kelly was going to be very good but injuries have cost him dearly for past 4 years and I wish him well at palace . Hobbs I don’t think was good enough nor whitbread. Glen Johnson plays much better at left back as he seems to remember to concentrate more than when he plays right back he gets complacent I expect Johnson to move on of someone will meet his wage demands

Warrington Wolves v Castleford Tigers
The Friday night super league game comes from the Halliwell Jones Stadium as Cup Finalist Castleford face beaten cup semi finalist Warrington.
Castleford head coach Daryl Powell has not surprisingly to me rested 10 players for this one, with Wembley next Saturday including key men Marc Sneyd, Michael Shenton, Daryl Clark, Kirk Dixon, Jake Webster, Craig Huby and Luke Dorn. It is a big risk has I said last week they wont want to go to Wembley on the back of a hammering.
I was eager to see what the handicap was going to be and early in the week Wolves were -12 but you had to be pretty quick to snap that up. When the Tigers 19 man squad were announced the line was pushed out to -22. I do fancy a win for the wolves but am always wary of giving up a 4 try start. Tigers players are basically playing for spots on the bench at Wembley as only Liam Finn, Weller Huraki and Frankie Moriano likely to start next week.
The Tigers back line will have a tough time stopping the Wolves from scoring and Joel Monaghan is best 4/9 to score and as short as 1/5 in places. He is 4/1 for a hat-trick which he may deliver on that, it not a great price. Rhys Evans on the other hand is 14/1 to grab a hat-trick Paddy Power. He plays on the opposite wing to Monaghan and at more than 3 times the odds I will be on for small stakes for big returns.
Another special I spotted was Rhys Evans and Ryan Atkins both to score at 5/2 William Hill. I could see all the three quarters scoring for the Wolves tonight, They were both on my shortlist as singles Evans 4/6 & Atkins 10/11 so I will take the double. My final selection is Monaghan but not Joel is brother Michael. The Tigers pack will have a youthful look to it and the experience duo of Higham & Monaghan will cause havoc around the ruck, it could have been either of them but in the end I opted for Monaghan at 5/2 Stan James.

I Found some time to provide you with some thinking and notes behind my selection for this game tweeted earlier. Time permitting this season I will look to provide more write ups as I did two seasons ago. I am looking to reduce the jumper of wagers placed last season and hope to have a bounce back season. While the season ended profitable off a 50+ unit season the prior year, I believe I can single out only the best opportunities. So, I will once again try to focus on quality v quantity. However there will be weekends where there will be a lot of quality so with that said, let’s get to the match stats.
It isn’t lost on me that United have looked like a new team, fresh with energy and a willingness and desire to put last season’s unmotivated campaign behind them. They have looked fantastic in pre-season with wins against Real Madrid (3-1), Roma (3-2) and Liverpool (3-1) and much if not all of that in my view comes down to the Manager Van Gaal who seems to have started to right the ship. Clearly while Moyes is a likeable man, he was out of his depth last season. Van Gaal has no lack of history managing ‘stars’ and so far it has shown. His system though will likely see players like Fellaini, Chicharito and perhaps Kagawa not used a lot but for United fans, wins matter more than who is on the pitch.
Statistically Swansea has had high scoring games to open their last 3 BPL seasons. Last year saw them fall to United at home 4-1. The season before saw them win 5-0 v QPR and before that fall to City 4-0. That’s 14 goals in their last 3 season opening matches.
Both teams ended last season on “over” runs. Swansea saw the over 2.5 go 5-1 in their last 6 away games last season with 24 goals in those 6 matches (4gpg average). United also ended the season on an over run with over 2.5 going 6-1 in their final 7 home games. From what I’ve seen this preseason they should continue to bag goals out of the gate. United fans imo do have reason for optimism.
H2H I noted that there has only been one clean sheet in 3 of the previous 4 clashes.
Van Gaal’s preferred formation is his 3-4-1-2 but the problem for this first match is that his first choice wing backs Valencia and Shaw won’t be available for this match so I can see Swansea finding the back of the net. On offense, RVP won’t start and it looks to be Welbeck partnering up with new captain Rooney up top.
Swansea will play with pace as they always seem to do away from home and Bony will be in the lineup for them.

For me it is clear that a lot of players have not had time to recover from the World Cup. I think English players might take a while to to become fully fit, especially due to the extreme heat in Brazil.

100% of Dinamo Zagreb’s home games have went over 3.5 goals this season and 75% of games overall have too. RNK Split have seen none of their games go over 3.5 goals but I’m still happy to go with it considering the price.
Both teams have scored in 100% of RNK Split’s away games but 0% in Dinamo Zagreb’s home games and seeing as Dinamo Zagreb are the clear favourites for this match, I’m staying well clear of that.

Gamba Osaka look a decent price of 1.75 tomorrow morning considering they are the form team in the league of late. They have won their last 5, conceding just one goal and tomorrow play at home to a team (Nagoya Grampus Eight) that are in the relegation places and whom they beat away back in May.

The problem I’ve been having is half the games I have selected as possible goal feasts do not show up on bet365 come kick of time.

I thought Norwich were poor against our boys last week, only mustering one shot on target. Just a warning to anyone tipping PSG against Bastia tomorrow. I have always realised there is some sort of curse with PSGs starting season matches.
Found some interesting information on betpredictor.co.uk
PSGs opponents this week is against a team led by Claude Makelele who has transformed them into a different team from last season. Bastia’s opening game finished a 3-3 draw to title challengers Marseille who themselves had to come back from 3-1 to draw the game.
PSG are very short to win the game and you can them at 1/7 to win the game. Based on their inability to finish off their opponents last week and Bastia’s fight back against Marseille we don’t think they will win as easily as the odds suggest. Especially since PSG are still gaining match fitness and Clause Makelele being one of the best defensive midfielders in his generation will set his team up to defend and make it difficult for PSG.
Our recommendation is to back Bastia Asian handicap +2.25 at 4/5. The bet will lose if PSG win by 3 goals or more.
Last season PSG drew their 1st two French Ligue 1 games, the first was away and second at home and this season they’ve already drawn their first away game, and second game is at home. As a long shot bet back a draw 13/2.

I will take your -1 PA. Took Rooney & Sturridge to score anytime on Tuesday and put it in a double at 3/1. Sturridge was 11/10 on 365 so I took the price early. Also took Lovren to score against his former team but not 100% sure he will start so risky one- got 15/2 anytime.
