TONDELA scored for me on Monday – can Benfica do the same on Tuesday?
As you’re probably aware I’m still hurting at tipping a team to net at odds of 2-1 but seeing the bet go down because the 33-1 shots somehow managed to shut out hosts Porto.
Benfica are another Portuguese side priced up on the big side to net although that’s understandable as they face the might of Bayern Munich in their quarter-final first leg.
The Lisbon side are 5-4 at Stan James to net in Germany and a massive 8-1 with bet365 to match the two goals bagged by Juventus in the last round – and that could have been more before the Italians mounted a glorious comeback.
Benfica are as big as 20-1 with boylesport to win and I’m not suggesting they’ll do a “Tondela” but I can see them scoring. Bayern will score too so both to net is a decent punt at 6-4 with bet365.
They have beaten Atletico Madrid and Zenit St Petersburg on the road this campaign and won at Sporting Lisbon on a run of 17 unbeaten away from home. Not a bad for a side often deemed poor travellers.
However, Bayern have won nine out of 10 at home in the tournament and Pep Guardiola has won 17 out of 19 at the Allianz Arena this season.
The other tie on Tuesday is an all-Spanish one between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Barca go into this stunned by Saturday’s El Clasico defeat at home to Real Madrid but knowing they have won six in a row against Atletico.
Barca were hot favourites but I expressed some concerns about the fitness of Messi, Suarez and Neymar after their World Cup trips to Argentina and all were kept quiet.
They should be more refreshed now and Atletico could have problems in defence with doubts over skipper Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez. If both are missing their defence will be seriously weakened.
As in the other tie the visitors are possibly being undermined but I don’t see anything other than a Barca win at no bigger than 8-15 with William and Betfred.
But again both teams could score. Barca have conceded in four of their last five at the Nou Camp and Atletico, who boast a super striker of their own in Antoine Griezmann, have scored in four of their last visits here.
Picking a Barcelona first scorer is always tough because it could go to any of their fabulous forwards but I expect Messi to net at 11-10 with William Hill.
