I'VE struggled to come up with a serious bet this week as the cards are very poor. There are some moderate types strutting their stuff at Musselburgh’s midweek meeting and once again I’ll be trimming my stakes accordingly.
JONNY DELTA (3.0) was sent off 11-10 on his last visit but managed only third to Golden Jeffrey. That was over two miles and the old boy reverts to 1m 4f, a distance he won over here the previous month, admittedly off a lower rating. Sean Mooney’s 7lb allowance helps in that department.
Tambour ran well at Hamilton last week, only being headed inside the final furlong, but the ground will be much slicker this afternoon which would be a worry.
No such ground concerns for Mr Sundowner, while Sakhalin Star has been in good nick lately at a slightly lower level. He likes a bit of ease in the ground and I was a bit surprised to see him put in as morning favourite.
LIL SOPHELLA (2.30) continues to drop in the ratings and, of course, there is a reason for that – she hasn’t been showing much this season.
However, there were signs of some green shoots of recovery at Thirsk when running fourth to Miss Goldsmith. The handicapper has dropped the mare another 2lb and this race may play to her hold-up style as there are a few keen-going types likely to ensure a solid pace.
Lil Sophella is now 9lb lower when not disgraced behind Lincoln Rocks in a stronger contest here in June and is worth an ew dabble in a modest handicap. The overnight 14-1 has disappeared but there was some 8-1 kicking about this morning.
Archie Watson sends a couple north and Salisbury winner Masarzan, beaten under a penalty on his return visit to that track last week, is at least in good nick at the moment. He looks pretty sure to run well.
Crazy Tornado holds Remember Rocky on their Ayr running in July and should be thereabouts, while Flinty Fell is slipping down the weights after running a bit below par this summer.
