Alan Thomson’s Tips: Ad Libitum can step up to the Plate

AD LIBITUM (4.00) could well be a step ahead of the handicapper and can justify favouritism in the Cumberland Plate at Carlisle.

He looked a bit unlucky to lose on the nod at Haydock but made no mistake nine days ago over course and distance. A 6lb penalty clearly makes life a bit tougher in this competitive handicap but Ad Libitum looks the one to beat. With Jim Goldie’s string in such hot form, I’ll be having an each-way saver on Theglasgowwarrior.

VIVE LA DIFFERENCE (3.30) needs to translate his cracking Hamilton form to Carlisle but the tracks are not dissimilar and he is worth an interest at around 7-1. This is a more competitive event than he has been encountering but is the type to keep on improving through the season.

At Bath this evening, CARRIE’S VISION (6.50) is better than her last run at York might suggest as she was chopped and changed looking for a run that never materialised. The winner went on to score at Royal Ascot last week.

WINGED SPUR (5.50) goes unpenalised for hacking up in an apprentices’ event at Ripon last week and is one to include at short odds in multiples.

THIMBLEWEED (5.10) looks a reliable favourite in the maiden at Salisbury. She ran on strongly to take third at Sandown and runner-up Cross Counter ran fourth to Baghdad at Royal Ascot last week.

BURGONET (4.10) is a typical Mark Johnston’s improving three-year-old and can follow up her course victory over Fabulous Red. She is cracking ew value as it is hard to knock her out of the frame.
