I TIPPED up a couple of nice winners yesterday but I keep hitting the crossbar in the feature events at Doncaster. Today I've got three bets at Donny plus two at Chester for members to mull over.
Doncaster 3.00
BYRON FLYER (3.00) has finished runner-up on his last three starts, all involving photo finishes, and the six-year-old may be better equipped than most to survive what could become a real slog down the straight over the St Leger distance.
Byron Flyer, fitted with first-time cheekpieces here, has winning form over hurdles on Town Moor and is just preferred over Penglai Pavilion. The Godolphin gelding showed stamina was his forte when beating The Cashel Man over 2m 2f in the Cesarewitch Trial at Newmarket last September, making most on good ground.
Doncaster 2.25
Karl Burke has campaigned HAVANA GREY (2.25) intelligently at home and abroad, his latest run coming at Deauville when chasing home stablemate Unfortunately in the Group 1 Prix Morny.
Havana Grey showed plenty of dash to make all in the Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood, beating Invincible Army, impressive winner of last Saturday’s Sirenia Stakes at Kempton. That sets a good standard and he may just have the edge over impressive Royal Ascot winner Heartache.
Doncaster 3.35
SHEIKHZAYEDROAD (3.35) was a narrow winner of this event 12 months ago but hasn’t sparkled so far this season. Sheikhzayedroad handled soft ground when running third to Order Of St George in the 2016 Ascot Gold Cup and a chance is taken he will bounce back from a few disappointments now encountering an easy surface.
His last run, a staying on fourth to Montaly in the Lonsdale Cup at York, offers encouragement as the gelding didn’t enjoy the clearest of passages two out. Montaly, a son of Yeats, is penalised 3lbs and the Chester Cup winner has really come into his own as a stayer this season.
Chester 5.40
ECHO OF LIGHTNING (5.40) has the look of a rewarding each-way bet at Chester.
Brian Ellison’s gelding was beaten a short head in this event last year off a 5lb lower mark when ridden by today’s amateur Simon Walker and Echo Of Lightning also landed an amateurs’ race over course and distance for a lady rider last summer.
He fairly sluiced through the mud to score emphatically at Pontefract before finding the company a bit too strong when not disgraced behind Kenstone over course and distance. This doesn’t appear as strong a contest as last year and stall seven is okay. Odds of around 7-1 last night seem generous.
Irish raider Korbous is a potential fly in the ointment. He has drawn the plum stall against the rail and has plenty of form in handicap company.
Chester 4.30
There are some disappointing types contesting the fillies’ maiden and GAKKU (4.30) was an expensive 1-3 loser at Ripon last time.
Blinkers are retained and perhaps she didn’t handle the firm ground on an undulating track. Being a daughter of Pivotal she should be better suited by today’s easy surface. Course specialist Franny Norton is a good booking for the Roger Varian filly.
